Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Amanda,

How are you doing? I hope all is well? I received your previous letter two months ago, regarding the camping holiday. I am writing to give my opinion about the trip.

I have known you to be an explorer and a lover of nature. I think the camping holiday this summer, will be a perfect idea due to your personality. It will be a great opportunity to interact with nature and learn new things. The camping holiday will also be a fun experience, especially if groups of persons attend.

Although it is good idea, but I do have my reservations about a camping holiday. It has some disadvantages which we cannot ignore. Camping in the open is not safe, due to thieves and kidnapers. The summer period is also not a perfect time to go on camping trips, as the weather can be so hot. Camps often times lack electric fans or air-conditioning and this can make living condition very difficult during the summer.

Even with all the disadvantages, I will really love to go on the camping holiday with you. It will be fun to spend the summer with friends and interact with nature.

It was nice to hear from you. I do hope to see you, this summer.

Yours sincerely,

Abigail

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You provided a clear rationale for why your friend would enjoy camping, identified realistic disadvantages, and confirmed your interest in joining the trip. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend. To reach a higher band, ensure that your ideas are slightly more developed; for example, when mentioning the lack of electricity, you could briefly explain how this impacts the overall comfort of the trip. Overall, the response is well-focused and meets all requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each point, and a concluding sentence. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the different ideas. You use some cohesive devices like 'Although', 'Even with', and 'especially', which help the flow of the text. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical. To improve, try to vary your linking words and ensure that the connection between sentences is smoother. For instance, the transition between the benefits and the drawbacks could be more fluid to enhance the overall readability.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task. You use words like 'explorer', 'reservations', and 'interact' correctly. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'groups of persons' (which is slightly unnatural; 'groups of people' is better) and 'camps often times' (which should be 'camps often' or 'camps oftentimes'). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, incorporating more precise collocations or less common synonyms would help elevate your score. The current range is functional but lacks the sophistication required for higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'Although it is good idea, but...' (you should not use 'although' and 'but' in the same clause) and 'kidnapers' (spelled 'kidnappers'). Additionally, there are some punctuation errors, such as unnecessary commas in 'to see you, this summer'. While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede communication. To improve, focus on eliminating redundant conjunctions and refining your punctuation. Increasing the variety of complex sentence structures while maintaining accuracy will help you achieve a higher band.
