Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear John,

I hope you are doing great. Here, I am writing to inform you that I received your letter regarding advice on a camping holiday.

I am thrilled to know that this summer, you are planning to go camping, and it is the best option to choose Tobermory for this. I am sure you will enjoy this.

Here are some things that you should be aware of. First, avoid to go for camping in scorching heat, as it can make you feel uncomfortable and tired while camping. Moreover, you will feel dehydrated all the time. So, try to go there in some good weather when it is a little rainy, and it will feel better. Secondly, do not swim there as the ocean is quite deep in the middle that could be dangerous and ruin your entire holiday plan.

Even if you want, I could come with you, as it will be more enjoyable and memorable to have two of us together. I know some tourist spots as well that might be helpful for you to enjoy more.

Just let me know.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You explained why your friend would enjoy camping, provided relevant disadvantages, and confirmed your interest in joining them. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For example, while you mention that camping in the heat is uncomfortable, you could have expanded more on the benefits of camping in Tobermory specifically to make the response more engaging. The letter covers the requirements well, but the depth of the content is slightly basic for a higher band score.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized, with each paragraph addressing a specific part of the prompt. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'First', 'Moreover', and 'Secondly' to guide the reader. However, the transitions between some sentences feel a bit mechanical. The paragraphing is clear, and the overall progression of ideas is easy to follow. To improve, try using a wider variety of linking words and phrases to connect your ideas more fluidly, rather than relying on simple sequence markers at the start of every sentence.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You use a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'scorching heat', 'dehydrated', and 'memorable' are used correctly. However, the vocabulary is generally quite standard and lacks the 'less common' items that would push the score into the higher bands. There are no significant errors in word choice that impede communication, but the range is somewhat limited to everyday language. Incorporating more descriptive adjectives or idiomatic expressions related to travel and outdoor activities would enhance your lexical score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are some grammatical inaccuracies. For instance, 'avoid to go for camping' should be 'avoid going camping', and 'the ocean is quite deep in the middle that could be dangerous' would be better phrased as 'the ocean is quite deep, which could be dangerous'. These errors do not impede communication, but they indicate a need for more consistent control over verb patterns and relative clauses. You have a good foundation, but more attention to detail is needed.
