Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Ric,

Hope you are doing well. First of all thank you for asking my advice on camping holiday. Because it is very first time you are going for camping holiday, you must need to be well prepared and organized. Even though camping itself is an exciting activity, but it also comes up with some challenges and sharpen your skills of surviving with optimum resources.

As I know you since childhood, you have had a keen interest of visiting natural places more as compared to modern hotels so in that sense camping is a perfect activity to do. While camping you will have chance to cook your meal from local ingredients and fun part is that sometimes you have some weird combination of ingredient available and you have to figure out what could be the best out of it. All these challenges will excites you a lot.

However, camping gives you free will to stay near nature. There are some potential disadvantages hidden underneath like weather can damage your camp, you might be tired after a long walk to the campsite and last but not least is that you have to carry your camping bag all the time while moving from one place to another.

In this summer, I am also planning to go Banff near Calgary for 2 days and 1 night. I would like to ask you to join.

Let me know if you are interested in camping this summer with me. I am flexible with my schedule, just let me know yours availability then we could plan accordingly.

Thanks again

Yours kindly

Ash

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have addressed all three bullet points of the task effectively. You explained why your friend would enjoy camping, identified specific disadvantages like weather and physical fatigue, and clearly extended an invitation to join you in Banff. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, and the ideas are well-developed. To reach a higher band, ensure that the transition between the benefits and the drawbacks is smoother, and try to provide slightly more descriptive detail in the explanation of the disadvantages to fully flesh out the response.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each focusing on a specific aspect of the prompt. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'However' and 'First of all', to guide the reader. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the flow between sentences could be more natural. For instance, the connection between the benefits of cooking and the 'weird combination of ingredients' is a bit abrupt. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that referencing is consistently clear would enhance the overall cohesion of the letter.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'optimum resources', 'keen interest', and 'potential disadvantages'. There are some minor issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'comes up with some challenges' (should be 'comes with') and 'excites you a lot' (should be 'will excite you'). While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precise control over collocations. Expanding your use of less common idiomatic expressions or more sophisticated adjectives would help elevate your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. However, there are several grammatical inaccuracies throughout the text, such as 'Because it is very first time' (missing 'the'), 'As I know you since childhood' (should be 'As I have known you'), and 'just let me know yours availability' (should be 'your availability'). While these errors are frequent, they rarely impede the reader's understanding. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles and possessive pronouns.
