Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Deval,

I have heard that you are interested in going on a camping holiday for the first time this summer. I think this is the best activity to do in summer, I am sure you will experience something new and you will definitely enjoy this as you will get chance to do lot of other activities during the camping, also you will learn how to survive without internet and with limited available resources.

I would like to highlight one disadvantage of camping is that at the end of the day you will feel tired due to so much of walking and physical activities and sue to summer the whether will be pretty hot so make sure you have water bottle and energy drink with you all the time.

I will also like to join you if i get leave from the office. As I also want to have this experience again.

Hope you enjoy your holiday's and let me know if you want more information about this.

Thanks,

Sam

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You explained why your friend would enjoy camping, identified potential disadvantages, and confirmed your interest in joining. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the explanation of why your friend would enjoy it is quite general. To reach a higher band, you should provide more specific examples or personal anecdotes to flesh out your points. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, and the purpose of the letter is clear throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is logically organized into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your points. You use basic cohesive devices like 'also' and 'as' to link ideas. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes a bit mechanical, and the transition between the benefits and the disadvantages could be smoother. The use of paragraphing is appropriate for a letter format. To improve, try using a wider variety of linking words and phrases to connect your ideas more naturally, such as 'On the other hand' or 'Furthermore'.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You use a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Words like 'resources', 'physical activities', and 'experience' are used correctly. There are some minor errors, such as 'sue to summer the whether' (due to summer the weather), which are likely slips but affect the precision of your writing. You rely on fairly common vocabulary; to achieve a higher score, try to incorporate more descriptive or less common collocations that fit the context of a camping holiday.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'I will also like to join you' (I would like to join you) and 'if i get leave' (if I get leave). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with comma splices in the first paragraph. These errors do not impede communication, but they do show a lack of control over more complex structures. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and consistent tense usage will help improve your accuracy.
