Dear ................. ,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Nikhil,

I hope you are having great time. I am writing this letter with regards to your upcoming vacation.

I believe you will have a great time camping. I know you are a big fan of outdoor and camping is truly stress buster activity and best way to experience nature. The location you choose is really perfect for this type of camping holiday and renowned for its flora and fauna.

This type of vacation is not without its drawbacks. You need to prepare a lot of things and make sure you do not forget any essential items for the vacation. On top of that you need to prepare all of your food by your own because there is no restaurant nearby.

I wish I could really join you. However, you know summer is always my busy season. I must keep my nose into grindstone and wait until winter before I can take holiday.

Please let me know if you have got any more questions.

Best regards

Lovejeet Singh

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have addressed all three bullet points of the task effectively. You explained why your friend would enjoy camping, identified specific disadvantages such as the need for preparation and lack of amenities, and clearly stated your inability to join them. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend. To reach a higher band, ensure that your ideas are slightly more developed; for instance, you could provide a specific example of a 'disadvantage' beyond just food preparation, such as the unpredictability of weather, to add more depth to your response.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each bullet point, and a closing. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'However' and 'On top of that' to transition between ideas. While the flow is generally smooth, the paragraphing is functional. To improve, you could use a wider variety of linking words and ensure that the progression between sentences feels more natural rather than mechanical. Overall, the message is easy to follow and the structure is appropriate for a semi-formal letter.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task. Phrases like 'stress buster activity' and 'flora and fauna' are used well. However, there are some minor inaccuracies and awkward phrasings, such as 'having great time' (missing an article) and 'keep my nose into grindstone' (the idiom is 'keep my nose to the grindstone'). While these do not impede communication, they show a need for more precise control over collocations and idiomatic expressions to reach a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'prepare all of your food by your own' (should be 'on your own') and 'take holiday' (missing an article). Additionally, 'I hope you are having great time' requires an article. While these errors are noticeable, they do not cause confusion for the reader. To improve, focus on article usage and prepositional accuracy. Your control of sentence structure is generally good, but increasing the variety of complex sentences would enhance your score.
