Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Jay,
Hopefully, you and your family have been keeping well. It's genuinely nice to get in touch with you again!
To begin with, as you asked for my thoughts regarding the camping trip you want to explore. I have travelled plenty of places in my life. However, one particular place which is my all time favorite is the Banff, and you should definitely go there for the camping.
Although, It would have some drawbacks such as camping would be expensive, filled with risks and cold weather on the mountains, but It will unwind you and It would be blast!
Moreover, this summer I have few holidays too. So, I would love to join you and your family, LOL. Let me know, If you guys are comfortable to take me with you and have a one spare space in your Campervan.
Let's keep this conversation going; I'm easy to contact. Sending lots of love to you and your family!
Best regards,
Mike

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt. You explain why your friend would enjoy camping, mention potential disadvantages like costs and risks, and confirm your interest in joining. However, the development of these points is somewhat limited. For example, the explanation of why your friend would enjoy it is brief, and the disadvantages are listed rather than fully explored. To reach a higher band, aim to expand on your ideas with more detail or personal anecdotes. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, maintaining a friendly and informal register throughout.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter is organized into clear paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your ideas. You use some cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'Although', and 'Moreover' to link your points. However, some of these transitions are used slightly awkwardly, such as starting a sentence with 'Although' followed by a comma and a list of drawbacks, which is grammatically incomplete. The flow between sentences is generally logical, but the connection between the introduction and the body paragraphs could be smoother. Using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring they are used in complete sentences would improve the overall cohesion.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You use a range of vocabulary that is generally appropriate for an informal letter, such as 'unwind', 'all time favorite', and 'in touch'. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'travelled plenty of places' (should be 'travelled to plenty of places') and 'have a one spare space' (should be 'have a spare space'). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your message clearly, it lacks the precision and flexibility required for higher bands. Incorporating more idiomatic expressions or descriptive adjectives would enhance your lexical range.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'It would have some drawbacks such as camping would be expensive' (incorrect clause structure) and 'I have few holidays' (should be 'a few'). Additionally, there are punctuation issues, such as the unnecessary comma after 'Let me know, If'. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of complex sentence structures will help improve your accuracy.
