Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Rohan,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter in response to the advice you had asked in the previous letter regarding the camping holiday.

From what I know about you, I believe that you will definitely enjoy the trip. Firstly camping holiday has very good scenic views that will refresh your mind. Along with that the thriller of climbing the mountains in rocky terrains will provide you unique yet enjoyable experience. Lastly there are several spots where you can swim, the heat from sun and cool from water is just combination made in the haven, you will definitely love it.

Although, the overall experience will be great, there will be some difficulties you have to face. First and foremost is the physical fatigue that you will encounter at the end of the day from climbing and walking long distances. Moreover, There could be a limited choice of food from which you have to choose that's the limitations you have to cope with during the tip.

I would have loved to came with you, but I had to attend my brother's wedding this summer which will leave me no time for the trip.

I hope you enjoy the trip and liked my advice.

Best regards

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You explained why your friend would enjoy camping, described potential disadvantages like physical fatigue and limited food choices, and clearly stated that you cannot join the trip due to a family wedding. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, and the ideas are relevant and well-developed. To reach a higher band, ensure that your explanations are slightly more detailed; for instance, you could expand on the 'limited food' point by mentioning the lack of kitchen facilities or the need to carry supplies, which would further demonstrate your ability to develop ideas.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized, with each paragraph focusing on a specific requirement of the task. You use transition words such as 'Firstly', 'Along with that', 'Although', and 'Moreover' to guide the reader through your points. However, some of these transitions are slightly mechanical or used in a way that feels a bit repetitive. The paragraphing is clear and appropriate for a letter format. To improve, try to vary your cohesive devices further and ensure that the flow between sentences feels more natural rather than relying on standard list-like connectors.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task, using words like 'scenic', 'fatigue', and 'terrains'. However, there are some awkward collocations and minor errors, such as 'thriller of climbing' (should be 'thrill') and 'combination made in the haven' (likely meant 'heaven'). These errors do not impede communication, but they do show a lack of precision. To improve, focus on learning common collocations and ensuring that the words you choose are used in their correct context. Expanding your range of descriptive adjectives would also enhance the quality of your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical slips, such as 'I would have loved to came with you' (should be 'come') and 'the heat from sun and cool from water is just combination' (missing articles). Additionally, there is a minor punctuation error with the capitalization of 'There' in the middle of a sentence. While you demonstrate an attempt at complex structures, the frequency of these small errors prevents a higher score. Focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles to improve your accuracy.
