Student answer (Band 4.5)

Dear Hamid,

I was really happy to hear that you are thinking about going on camping this summer. I honestly think you will love this experience a lot. Camping is always great way to relax and stay active. It gives you a break from busy city life and spend some time in nature. you can breath fresh air, go for walks and enjoy quiet mornings.

Of course, there are some downsides to keep in mind. The weather can change rapidly

Overall4.5

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.0

The response is significantly under the 150-word minimum requirement, which severely impacts the task achievement score. While the letter begins to address the first two bullet points—explaining why the friend would enjoy camping and mentioning potential disadvantages—the response is incomplete. It fails to address the third bullet point regarding whether you would like to join the friend, and the letter ends abruptly mid-sentence. Because the response is less than 100 words and fails to cover all parts of the prompt, it cannot be awarded a higher band.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 4.0

The response is too short to demonstrate a full range of cohesive devices or effective paragraphing. While the initial sentences are logically sequenced, the abrupt ending prevents any assessment of overall progression or the use of linking words to connect ideas. There is a lack of paragraph structure, and the text stops before the ideas can be properly developed or linked to the final requirement of the prompt.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, such as 'great way' and 'enjoy'. While the words chosen are appropriate for the context of a letter to a friend, there is no attempt to use less common or more precise lexical items. The range is very limited, which is expected given the extremely short length of the response. To improve, you should aim to incorporate more descriptive adjectives and varied collocations related to outdoor activities.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response contains some basic grammatical errors, such as 'going on camping' (should be 'going camping') and 'you can breath' (should be 'breathe'). The sentence structures are simple, and there is a lack of punctuation and capitalization, such as the lowercase 'you' at the start of the final sentence. Due to the very limited length, there is no evidence of complex sentence structures, which prevents a higher score in this criterion.
