Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Ashley,
I hope you're doing well. I would like to congratulate you on your first camping trip ever. There are few suggestions that I can be helpful to you, as I have been going for camping for a while now.
As per my knowledge, you are a highly trained swimmer, and there are many lakes available nearby, where you can do water activities such as kayaking, swimming and rafting. Moreover, you may face some difficulties as it is been raining, and it is the most ideal weather for mosquitos. I would like to suggest you to carry number of insect repellents. Additionally, Water supply is only available for certain time; for example, from 9:00 am to 11:00 am only. Hence, I would recommend you to wash dishes during that period of time.
However, I am also planning to visit the Algonquin national park with my housemates, which is the best camping place in Ontario. This time, we'll be staying there for a week, unlike last time, when we had to comeback early due to our exams.
I wish you truly enjoy your first camping trip and convey best wishes to your family from my side.
Best wishes,
Japel

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You explained why your friend would enjoy camping by highlighting their swimming skills and local water activities. You described disadvantages, such as mosquitoes and limited water supply, and clearly stated your plans regarding a trip to Algonquin National Park. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend. To reach a higher band, ensure that your ideas are slightly more developed; for example, you could elaborate on why the specific water activities would be particularly enjoyable for your friend, rather than just listing them. Overall, the task is fully addressed.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized with clear paragraphing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt. You use cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Additionally', and 'Hence' to connect your ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical or forced. For instance, the transition to the third paragraph ('However, I am also planning...') is a bit abrupt, as the 'However' does not logically contrast with the previous advice about washing dishes. Improving the flow between sentences would enhance the overall coherence of the letter.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'insect repellents', 'water activities', and 'national park'. There are some minor inaccuracies in collocation and word choice, such as 'going for camping' (should be 'going camping') and 'carry number of insect repellents' (should be 'carry a number of'). While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the vocabulary from being considered 'flexible' or 'precise'. To improve, focus on natural collocations and idiomatic expressions suitable for informal correspondence.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'it is been raining' (should be 'it has been raining') and 'comeback' (which should be written as two words, 'come back', when used as a verb). Additionally, there are minor punctuation and article usage issues, such as 'Water supply is only available for certain time'. While these errors are noticeable, they do not cause difficulty for the reader. To achieve a higher score, focus on consistent verb tense usage and correct article placement.
