Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Nilesh,

How are you? Hope everything is well? I received your letter regarding the summer camping trip to Algonquin Provincial Park, Thunder Bay.

First and foremost, I would like to suggest, to pack all your essential items like tent, mattress, charger, lights and water bottle. As this is your first camping experience, it will be an adventure for you. Also, I think you should enjoy this trip alone as you have been working 12 hour a day since you got the job, which can result as a stress buster for you.

Moreover, there might be some potential disadvantages for your trips alone as you will not be able to ask for a help to anyone as well as safety will be most unwanted risk you will be facing when spending night in a tent a park because of some wild animals at the property.

However, I would have come with you for the camp but surprisingly got a promotion to manager in my department. Therefore, I am busy working at new projects, doing trainings and catching deadlines.

I hope my advice will benefit you in a positive way and you enjoy your first camping trip

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have addressed all three bullet points required by the task. You explained why your friend would enjoy the trip, identified potential disadvantages, and clearly stated that you cannot join them. However, the development of your ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the explanation of why your friend would enjoy camping is brief, and the advice on packing is not explicitly requested by the prompt. To improve, focus on expanding your points with more detail, such as describing the specific benefits of nature or elaborating on the safety risks mentioned. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, and the purpose of the letter is clear throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized into paragraphs, each focusing on a specific aspect of the prompt. You use some cohesive devices such as 'First and foremost', 'Moreover', and 'However' to link your ideas. However, the flow between sentences is occasionally mechanical. For example, the transition between the packing advice and the reason for enjoying the trip is a bit abrupt. Additionally, some referencing is slightly unclear, such as the phrase 'safety will be most unwanted risk', which disrupts the logical progression of the sentence. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring smoother transitions would enhance the overall coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task. You use some relevant terms like 'essential items', 'potential disadvantages', and 'stress buster'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'result as a stress buster' (should be 'act as') and 'ask for a help to anyone' (should be 'ask anyone for help'). There is also a slight misuse of 'unwanted risk' in the context of safety. To reach a higher band, try to use more precise collocations and avoid repetitive phrasing. The vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, but lacks the flexibility and precision required for higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text. Examples include 'working 12 hour a day' (should be 'hours'), 'safety will be most unwanted risk' (missing article), and 'I would have come with you' (the context implies a future or present refusal, so 'I would like to come' or 'I would have liked to come' would be more accurate). There are also minor punctuation issues. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement, article usage, and ensuring your verb tenses accurately reflect the intended meaning.
