Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear John,
I hope you are doing well. I have received your letter you want advice from me on camping and I really appreciate that you have decided to explore new adventures and give me this opportunity to advice you as you know I had done many campings and I highly recommend to you that you should also try it.
Furthermore, I would also like to tell you that there are also some disadvantages of doing camping as you know nowadays weather is changing and you should carry all the basic needs to protect yourself from rain and severe heat. However, many wild animals will also roam around you at night as you know it’s a wild animals area so I would suggest you take some firewood and matchsticks to protect yourself.
Moving further, if you are planning to go next month than I can also join you because I will take vacation leave from my work and some of my friends will also join us and I am sure this will be our best camping. I hope this letter finds you well.
Best,
Anamika

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You explained why camping is enjoyable, provided relevant disadvantages, and confirmed your interest in joining your friend. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the advice on protecting against wild animals by using firewood is a bit simplistic. To reach a higher band, you could expand on the benefits of camping, such as the connection with nature or the mental health benefits of disconnecting from technology, to provide a more well-rounded and engaging response.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, each focusing on one of the bullet points. You use some cohesive devices like 'Furthermore', 'However', and 'Moving further' to connect your ideas. However, the transitions are occasionally a bit mechanical or repetitive. The flow between sentences could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring that referencing is clearer. For example, the sentence 'I have received your letter you want advice from me' lacks a conjunction, which makes the connection between the two clauses feel abrupt. Improving sentence-level cohesion will help the overall flow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for this task, such as 'explore new adventures', 'severe heat', and 'vacation leave'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'I had done many campings' (should be 'I have been camping many times') and 'it’s a wild animals area' (should be 'it is an area with wild animals'). These errors do not impede communication, but they do limit the precision of your writing. To improve, focus on learning common collocations related to travel and outdoor activities.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While you successfully use some complex sentences, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with verb tenses and article usage, such as 'I have received your letter you want advice' and 'if you are planning to go next month than I can also join you' (should be 'then'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, with some run-on sentences that could be broken up for clarity. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and correct tense usage will significantly improve your accuracy.
