Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Marcos,

It was great to hear from you that you're considering going on a camping trip this summer. I am sure you're going to enjoy it as it will give you time to stay away from the busy routine.

The main advantage of going camping is exploring nature and giving you a chance to disconnect from city life. In the trip, you would likely experience the stress free enviornment by performing some activities such as swimming in the lake and sitting around the campfire. Moreover, this will disconnect you from technology and broaden your interests outside the internet world. Such adventurous trips give you a sense of freedom.

However, there are some drawbacks. As the weather could be unpredictable, you may experience fluctuations in temperature. There are some restricted areas as well that we can't explore. Also, you would be sleeping on uncomfortable tents and making your own simple meals using sufficient resources and supplies. Another major thing I want to mention is the limited bathroom facilities.

I would be happy to join you and it would be a great chance to spend quality time with a friend. We can choose the campsite and plan the activities together. Let me know what you think.

See you soon!

Yours lovingly,

Lizz

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt effectively. You clearly explained the benefits of camping, such as disconnecting from technology and enjoying nature. You also provided relevant disadvantages, including unpredictable weather and limited facilities, and confirmed your willingness to join your friend. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, and the purpose of the letter is clear throughout. The ideas are well-developed and relevant to the task, meeting the requirements for a Band 7.0 or higher. To reach a higher band, ensure that all descriptions are fully elaborated with slightly more depth.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each point, and a concluding offer to join the trip. You use cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'However', and 'Also' to transition between ideas effectively. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different requirements of the task. The flow of information is natural and easy to follow. The use of referencing is generally accurate, ensuring that the reader can easily track the subject matter throughout the letter.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your ideas clearly. Phrases like 'busy routine', 'disconnect from city life', and 'unpredictable weather' are well-chosen and natural. There are a few minor errors, such as 'uncomfortable tents' (tents are usually 'cramped' or 'basic' rather than uncomfortable) and 'enviornment' (spelling error). However, these do not impede communication. To improve, try to incorporate more precise collocations or slightly more sophisticated vocabulary to describe the camping experience, which would help you move into the higher band range.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most of your sentences are error-free, and your control over grammar is generally strong. There are a few minor slips, such as 'In the trip' (should be 'On the trip') and 'making your own simple meals using sufficient resources' (the word 'sufficient' is slightly misused here; 'limited' or 'basic' would be more accurate in this context). These errors are infrequent and do not interfere with the overall meaning of the letter. Your punctuation is generally accurate throughout.
