Student answer (Band 5.0)

Dear David,

how are your parents and younger brother, hope they are good? i am writing as regards to the camping meeting , you inquiring of me for direction.

Everywhere settings that involves young stars, camping meeting is the most exciting place owing the activities parkaged in their programmes, It is a place everyone would like to be due to how it is organised to accommodate every class of individual the programme is of various agendas that cut across all levels which i know you will admire like camp fire.

On the hand, despite the agendas of excitement ,there are some activities that be so disturbing for instance. In boys Brigade camping activities there are series of walking during the meeting ranging from physical activities and marching around the town which could be so tiring and stressful.

Well, i wouldt mind follow you if you will be kind enough to sponsor me to the camp at least together it will be an added advantage to cruise around

i will really appreciate if i could make it with you to the camp.

your friend,

James,

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The letter addresses all three bullet points: explaining why the friend would enjoy camping, describing disadvantages, and expressing interest in joining. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited and occasionally unclear. For example, the explanation of why the friend would enjoy camping is vague, using phrases like 'everywhere settings' and 'young stars' which do not clearly communicate the appeal of camping. The description of disadvantages is also slightly confusing, as it focuses specifically on a 'Boys Brigade' context rather than general camping. To improve, ensure that your ideas are clearly articulated and directly relevant to the prompt's general context.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The letter is organised into paragraphs, which is a positive step. However, the flow of ideas is often disjointed. The use of cohesive devices is mechanical and sometimes inaccurate, such as 'On the hand' (should be 'On the other hand') and 'owing the activities'. The transition between sentences is frequently abrupt, making it difficult for the reader to follow the logic. To improve, focus on using a wider range of linking words correctly, such as 'furthermore', 'however', or 'consequently', and ensure that each paragraph has a clear, singular focus that connects logically to the next.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is quite limited and often imprecise. There are several instances of non-standard word choices or awkward phrasing, such as 'parkaged in their programmes' (likely meant 'packaged' or 'included') and 'cruise around'. The expression 'young stars' is also inappropriate for the context of a camping holiday. While the meaning is generally understandable, the lack of precision and the presence of spelling errors (e.g., 'wouldt') hinder the overall quality of the writing. You should aim to use more natural collocations and ensure that your word choices are appropriate for a semi-formal or informal letter.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response contains a high frequency of grammatical errors, including issues with subject-verb agreement, punctuation, and sentence structure. For instance, 'how are your parents... hope they are good?' is a run-on sentence, and 'there are some activities that be so disturbing' is grammatically incorrect. There is a lack of complex sentence structures, and the errors often distract from the message. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence construction, ensuring that every sentence has a clear subject and verb, and paying closer attention to punctuation, particularly the use of commas and full stops.
