Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Alex,

I am glad to hear that you're thinking about going on a camping holiday this summer. You must be very excited because this is your first time. I think you would really enjoy it because you love spend time outdoors with nature. Camping is a great way to escape from the busy city life, enjoy leisure time with beautiful scenery, and try different things. You can also go hiking, swim in a lake and sit around a campfire at night. It would be a fun and relaxing experience.

However, camping does have some disadvantages. The weather can be unpredictable, and sleeping in a tent may be uncomfortable, especially if it rains. There can also be insects, and you have to cook your own meals and carry a lot of equipment. If you are not used to being outdoors these things might be a little difficult to survive at first.

I'd definitely like to go camping with you this summer. It'd be much more enjoyable to experience your first camping trip together. We could choose beautiful and safe campsite, plan some activities and have lots of fun. Let me know what you think!

Best wishes,

Sam

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explain why your friend would enjoy camping, provide a balanced view of the disadvantages, and express a clear willingness to join the trip. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, and the purpose of the letter is clear from the beginning. The ideas are well-developed and relevant, providing a cohesive response that fully meets the requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The letter is well-organized with a logical progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which makes the letter easy to follow. You use appropriate cohesive devices such as 'However', 'especially if', and 'If you are', which help to connect your ideas smoothly. The paragraphing is clear and appropriate for a letter format. The flow of information is natural, and the relationship between the ideas is consistently clear throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary that is appropriate for the context of a friendly letter. Phrases like 'escape from the busy city life', 'unpredictable', and 'beautiful scenery' show a good command of descriptive language. While the vocabulary is generally accurate and natural, there is room to incorporate more sophisticated or idiomatic expressions to reach the highest band. The current range is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly and effectively without any significant errors in word choice or collocation.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The letter displays a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are error-free, and the grammar is generally accurate. There is a minor error in the phrase 'love spend time', which should be 'love spending time'. Additionally, 'choose beautiful and safe campsite' requires an article, such as 'a beautiful and safe campsite'. Despite these occasional slips, your control over grammar is strong, and the errors do not impede communication or cause confusion for the reader.
