Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Manjot Singh,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter to give you advice regarding your camping holiday for this summer.

Firstly, i think that you really enjoy the camping holiday because it is new experience for you. this help you to enjoy the natural environment and this days you to avoid your mobile phone which beneficial for your health.

secondly, there are somethings which you have to know is that you must have the medicine, firstaids kit and ready to eat food. you must have extra cloths such as rain coat because we can not expect the weather in forest.

I really like to join with you but due to work pressure I am not able to come with you. we can make plans for future whenever I have vacation from my job.

I feel very happy for you. I will see you soon

thank you

Robin Singh

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The letter covers all three bullet points required by the prompt: explaining why the friend would enjoy camping, describing potential disadvantages, and addressing the invitation to join. However, the development of these points is somewhat limited. For instance, the 'disadvantages' section is framed more as a list of advice/precautions (medicine, raincoats) rather than a discussion of the actual drawbacks of camping, such as lack of comfort or unpredictable weather. To reach a higher band, you should expand on your ideas with more detail and personal reflection to fully address the 'why' and 'how' behind your points.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter follows a logical structure with a clear opening and closing. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'secondly', and 'however' (though 'however' was missing, the transition between paragraphs is functional). Paragraphing is present, which helps the reader follow your argument. To improve, try to use a wider variety of linking words and ensure that your referencing is consistent. Some sentences feel slightly disconnected, and improving the flow between your advice and the personal invitation would make the letter read more naturally.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing you to communicate your message clearly. You use some topic-specific vocabulary like 'natural environment' and 'work pressure'. However, there are several instances of awkward phrasing and minor errors, such as 'firstaids kit' (first-aid kit) and 'extra cloths' (extra clothes). The range of vocabulary is somewhat limited and relies on simple, repetitive structures. To achieve a higher score, try to incorporate more precise collocations and avoid basic errors in word formation.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

Your writing shows a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally distract the reader, such as 'i think that you really enjoy' (should be 'will really enjoy'), 'this help you' (should be 'this will help you'), and 'we can not expect the weather' (should be 'we cannot predict the weather'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with the use of capital letters at the start of sentences. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and consistent tense usage will significantly improve your accuracy.
