Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear James,
I hope you are doing great. I heard that you are making plans about going on a camping holiday and this is going to be your first ever camping holiday this summer.
I believe that this would be an excellent experience for you, since you have a fond of nature. Additionally, this can help you to gain additional knowledge about wildlife too, as your final year project is also based on wildlife conservation so, I think that this camping experience would help you a lot in this manner.
However, you must have appropriate clothing for this, as the forests have a lot of venomous insects, thus you should also be carrying an insect repellent with you. Moreover, beware about the fire, the recent reports states that the risk of forest fire is sky rocketing.
Talking about me, I will apply for a leave at my job and if got approved I might go with you during this summer.
Yours faithfully,
Holland

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: explaining why your friend would enjoy camping, describing disadvantages, and expressing your interest in joining. The ideas are relevant and clearly presented. However, the development of these points is somewhat brief. For instance, while you mention the final year project, you could have elaborated more on how the camping environment specifically aids that research. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, though the closing 'Yours faithfully' is incorrect for a personal letter; 'Yours sincerely' or 'Best wishes' would be more suitable for a friend.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter follows a logical progression, with each paragraph focusing on a specific requirement of the task. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Additionally', 'However', and 'Moreover' to link ideas. However, the transition between the introduction and the body paragraphs is a bit abrupt. The paragraphing is generally clear, but the final paragraph is quite short. To improve, ensure that your sentences flow more naturally into one another rather than feeling like a list of points. The use of referencing is generally clear, though the structure of the sentences could be more varied to improve the overall flow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'wildlife conservation', 'venomous insects', and 'insect repellent'. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'you have a fond of nature' (should be 'you are fond of nature') and 'the recent reports states' (should be 'state'). Additionally, 'sky rocketing' is a bit informal and slightly misused in this context. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the precision and flexibility required for a higher band score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'I heard that you are making plans about going' (should be 'plans to go'), 'the recent reports states' (subject-verb agreement error), and 'if got approved' (missing subject 'it'). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and ensuring that your complex sentences are grammatically complete. Punctuation is generally acceptable, but be careful with comma splices, such as in the second paragraph.
