Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Max,

I hope you are doing well. I'm writing this to give my best advice on camping which you are planning this summer.

First and foremost thing is choice of location. I would suggest you should go for Kamloops camping site. It has a lot of breathtaking view which includes mountains, lakes and exposure to wildlife. I guarantee you that, you have not seen these kind of beauty in your life. The place is peaceful where you can literally hear the chirping of birds during the evening and the sunset is just amazing which you not miss if you go to this place.

There are several pitfalls of camping such as, it it hard to find a shower area empty in early morning so you have to get up early around 5AM, before it gets crowded. Second is weather, as you know we have unpredictable weather conditions in BC so you have to buy a tent which is waterproof as well as the cover should be thick enough so you would not feel much heat inside.

I know we have been talking for long time that me and you off for camping together, but unfortunately I would not be able to join during the holidays as I have too many things to handle at my workplace.

I hope you will consider my advise and make a plan to go on a camping holiday. Please let me know if you have any questions related to this and do not forget to take beautiful pictures there.

Happy holidays.

Regards,

Paras

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You explained why your friend would enjoy camping by highlighting the scenery and peaceful atmosphere, identified practical disadvantages like early morning shower queues and weather unpredictability, and clearly stated that you cannot join the trip. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend. To reach a higher band, ensure that your ideas are slightly more developed; for instance, you could have elaborated more on the specific 'workplace' commitments that prevent you from joining to add more personal detail and depth to the response.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with clear paragraph breaks for each point requested. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'First and foremost', 'Second', and 'but unfortunately' to guide the reader. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes a bit mechanical. To improve, try to vary your linking words and ensure that referencing is always clear. For example, in the second paragraph, the transition between the location description and the 'pitfalls' could be smoother. Overall, the message is easy to follow and the structure is appropriate for a semi-formal letter.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using descriptive phrases like 'breathtaking view' and 'unpredictable weather conditions'. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'these kind of beauty' (should be 'this kind of beauty') and 'my advise' (should be 'my advice'). While you successfully communicate your meaning, the vocabulary is generally functional rather than sophisticated. To improve, focus on using more precise collocations and ensure you distinguish between nouns and verbs, such as 'advice' versus 'advise'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical slips throughout the text. Examples include 'I'm writing this to give my best advice on camping which you are planning' (missing 'for'), 'you have not seen these kind of beauty' (subject-verb agreement), and 'me and you off for camping' (missing a verb). These errors do not impede communication, but they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on subject-verb agreement and ensuring all clauses have a clear subject and verb.
