Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sam,

Hope this letter finds you well. I am writing this letter in response of your query regarding the plan of your summer camp.

I know you are keen to explore the nature and you want to try something new. That's why, I suggest you to go Tirund hills which is located in Himalayas for your camp. This place is well known for the campers and mountaineers. I am sure you will like this camp because there is a fishing pond too and I know you are crazy for fishing. Moreover, this place is not too far from our home town. Furthermore, the tracking distance to reach at camp is not too long.

In this place, there are some cons too. As it is on the top of the mountain there is no arrangement of bathroom and toilets. You have to take a portable toilet seat with you. Furthermore, you have to pack the portable gas and food items because there are no such facilities available on the hill.

You will be happy after hearing that I am also free in this summers because my college has been closed for summer vacations since last week. I also eagerly want a trip to chill my self and get a short break from daily chaos. I will be delighted to join you in this camp. If you are agree we will make a plan together to arrange everything we need.

Hope to hear from you soon. Love to uncle and Aunt.

Yours faithfully,

John

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: explaining why your friend would enjoy camping, describing disadvantages, and confirming your interest in joining. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend. However, the development of ideas is somewhat basic. For instance, while you mention the lack of bathroom facilities as a disadvantage, you could have expanded on how this might impact the overall experience to provide a more thorough response. The letter is well-structured and clearly communicates your intentions, meeting the requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter follows a logical progression, with each paragraph focusing on a specific requirement of the prompt. You use a variety of cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Furthermore', and 'In this place' to link your ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive in their placement at the start of sentences. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different topics. Overall, the message is easy to follow, and the relationship between ideas is clear throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using words like 'mountaineers', 'vacations', and 'delighted'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'tracking distance' (likely meaning 'trekking') and 'chill my self' (which is informal and slightly unnatural). Additionally, 'in response of your query' should be 'in response to your query'. While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate that your control over collocation and idiomatic phrasing could be improved to reach a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'I suggest you to go' (should be 'I suggest that you go' or 'I suggest going'), 'If you are agree' (should be 'If you agree'), and 'in this summers' (should be 'this summer'). Punctuation is generally functional, though there are some minor issues with article usage and prepositions. While these errors are noticeable, they do not prevent the reader from understanding your meaning. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of infinitive versus gerund forms.
