Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Alex,
I hope you are doing well.
I am delighted to hear that you are planning to go camping this summer. I am glad you contacted me for advice about camping, and I would be happy to share my experience and offer a few suggestions.
I believe you and your friend will enjoy a camping holiday whether they are a beginner or an experienced camper. One of the main reasons is that camping offers a different experience every time. However, you should prepare yourself well in advance and consider factors such as the weather and the location.
Some possible problems you could face at the campsite are the presence of dangerous animals and unpredictable weather, which can lead to problems with cooking and sleeping at night.
Thank you for inviting me to go camping with you, but unfortunately I have already made other plans with my family this summer. We planned this vacation a long time ago.
I hope you will enjoy the vacation. Let me know if you need any further information, and I'd be happy to help.
Best wishes,
Anuj

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You explain why camping is enjoyable, mention potential disadvantages like dangerous animals and weather, and clearly state that you cannot join your friend. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For example, when explaining why your friend would enjoy camping, you mention it offers a 'different experience' but do not elaborate on specific benefits like connecting with nature or relaxation. Similarly, the disadvantages are listed briefly. To reach a higher band, you should expand on your points with more personal detail or specific examples to make the letter feel more authentic and fully developed.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is well-organized with a clear structure. Each paragraph focuses on a specific part of the prompt, which makes the information easy to follow. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'However', 'but', and 'although' to link ideas. The progression of the letter is logical, moving from the initial greeting to the advice, the drawbacks, and finally the response to the invitation. To improve, you could incorporate a wider range of cohesive devices and ensure that the transition between the advice and the disadvantages feels more natural rather than just a list of points.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You use a sufficient range of vocabulary to communicate your ideas clearly. Phrases like 'delighted to hear', 'well in advance', and 'unpredictable weather' are appropriate for a semi-formal letter to a friend. The word choice is generally accurate and natural. To achieve a higher score, try to incorporate more varied or less common collocations. For instance, instead of saying 'problems with cooking', you could use 'logistical challenges regarding meal preparation'. Your spelling is accurate throughout the response, and the tone is consistently friendly and appropriate for the task.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
Your grammar is generally accurate, and you demonstrate control over simple and some complex sentence structures. Most of your sentences are error-free, which ensures that your message is conveyed without confusion. For example, the use of the conditional 'if you need any further information' is handled correctly. There are no major grammatical errors that impede communication. To improve, you could experiment with a greater variety of complex structures, such as using more relative clauses or passive voice where appropriate, to demonstrate a wider grammatical range.
