Student answer (Band 6.5)
Hello Krina,
I hope this letter find you in radiant health. I received your letter and heard that you’re going for one week long camping trip at Humber River National Park near Kingston. I’ve been there multiple times and would like to share useful information.
Firstly, I believe you’ll enjoy this trip, as you’re nature lover and love spending time near lakes, camping and Barbeque at the lake. These all activities are included in your trip and having your friends with you, going on hikes and prepare food is best. Secondly, this national park is perfect for outdoor activities and has grocery and petrol pump store nearby. The staff is quite friendly and always available to help.
Furthermore, I checked the weather forecast for next week and there is a chance of thunderstorm during weekend. Due to this, I advice you to pack extra batteries, food and water supplies. Also keep body creams which helps to prevent bug bites.
In addition to this, I’m planning to do camping in Alberta near Jasper lake. The camping is for 5 days and Alberta is famous for it’s lakes, hikes and natural scenery, I would love to invite you and looking forward to know about your thoughts before end of this month.
I wish you good luck for your trip and enjoy it.
Regards,
Jack.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You explained why your friend would enjoy camping, identified potential disadvantages (weather and insects), and extended an invitation for a future trip. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend. However, the development of ideas is somewhat uneven. For instance, the disadvantages are mentioned briefly, and the explanation of why your friend would enjoy the trip relies on a list of activities rather than a more nuanced description. To reach a higher band, ensure that each point is fully developed with more descriptive language and personal insight.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each focusing on a specific aspect of the prompt. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', 'Furthermore', and 'In addition to this' to guide the reader. While these are effective, the flow between some sentences feels slightly mechanical. The referencing is generally clear, though the transition between the advice for the friend's trip and the invitation to your own trip could be smoother. Overall, the message is easy to follow, and the paragraphing is used appropriately to structure the response.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'radiant health', 'natural scenery', and 'weather forecast' are used correctly. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'prepare food' (should be 'preparing food') and 'keep body creams' (should be 'use insect repellent'). There is also a minor error with 'it's' instead of 'its'. While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the vocabulary from being considered highly flexible or precise. Expanding your range of descriptive adjectives and idiomatic expressions would enhance this score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors throughout the text, such as 'I hope this letter find you' (should be 'finds'), 'one week long camping trip' (should be 'a week-long'), and 'I advice you' (should be 'advise'). Additionally, there are some punctuation and article usage issues, such as 'camping and Barbeque at the lake' (should be 'camping and barbecues'). While these errors are noticeable, they do not cause significant difficulty for the reader. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct usage of nouns and verbs.
