Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear alex,

I am glad to hear that you are thinking to going for camping holiday this summer. I think it would be great experience for you.

one reason i believe you would enjoy camping is that it gives you a chance to spend time with nature and escape the stress of everyday life. You can relax, enjoy beautiful scenery and take part in outdoor activities such as hiking, fishing and campfire cooking. It is also good opportunity to meet new people and learn new skills.

however, camping does have a few disadvantages. The weather can be unpredictable and rain may make trip less enjoyable. In addition, you may have to deal with insects, uncomfortable sleeping arrangements and limited access to facilities such as showers and electricity. therefore, it is important to be well prepared before leaving.

as your last question, I would definitely like to go camping with you this summer. it would be great to spend time together outdoors and i could also help with setting up the tent and other campinh activities since a have some experience.

I hope this advice help you make your dicision. let me know what you decide

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly explain the benefits of camping, such as connecting with nature and stress relief, and provide a balanced view by detailing disadvantages like unpredictable weather and limited facilities. Your position regarding joining your friend is clear and well-integrated. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, maintaining a friendly and informal register throughout. To reach a higher band, ensure that your ideas are slightly more extended; for example, you could provide a specific anecdote or a more detailed reason for why you enjoy camping to add depth to your response.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each prompt requirement, and a concluding sentence. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'one reason', 'in addition', and 'therefore' to link your ideas. However, the flow is occasionally slightly mechanical. To improve, try to vary your linking words and ensure that the transition between sentences feels more natural. Paragraphing is used correctly, which helps the reader follow your argument easily. The overall structure is sound and serves the purpose of the task well.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your ideas clearly. Phrases like 'escape the stress of everyday life' and 'unpredictable weather' are well-chosen and appropriate for the context. There are some minor spelling errors, such as 'dicision' instead of 'decision' and 'campinh' instead of 'camping', which are likely slips. While the vocabulary is adequate, it is mostly functional. To achieve a higher score, try to incorporate more precise or descriptive adjectives and collocations to make your writing more engaging and sophisticated.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. However, there are several grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'thinking to going' (should be 'thinking of going'), 'great experience' (missing an article: 'a great experience'), and 'I hope this advice help' (should be 'helps'). Additionally, there are frequent issues with capitalization, particularly at the start of sentences and with proper nouns like 'alex'. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on proofreading for subject-verb agreement and basic punctuation.
