Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sheli,

It has been a long time since we meet last time. I am very excited about the idea you mention for the camping trip that you are planing this summer.

I am more certain that you enjoy the camping holiday. you will absolutely love the idea of sleeping in the open sky by gazing at the stars. Additionally, most of the camping places provide you with the benefit of cooking your own meal like preparing chicken barbecue.

Unfortunately, there are few disadvantages. First, that you will have to survive on the food that you have carried. There will be no stall or shop and hence you there will be no choice in getting the food that you crave during that time. Second, there may be safety issue sometime, like the threat from animals.

Additionally, I have been to various camping with my family and I would love to join you. I believe that we will together have more fun and make amazing memories.

hope you meet you soon.

Thanks & regards,

Reshma

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: explaining why your friend would enjoy camping, describing disadvantages, and confirming your interest in joining. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For example, the disadvantages are mentioned briefly without much elaboration. To reach a higher band, try to expand on your points with more specific details or personal anecdotes. Overall, you have fulfilled the requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each focusing on a specific part of the prompt. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Additionally' and 'Unfortunately' to transition between ideas. However, some of the linking is a bit mechanical, and the flow between sentences could be smoother. For instance, the transition between the introduction and the first body paragraph is slightly abrupt. Improving the variety of your linking words and ensuring that your referencing (e.g., 'that' or 'this') is always clear will help improve the flow of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You use a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly, such as 'gazing at the stars' and 'amazing memories'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'safety issue sometime' instead of 'safety issues sometimes' and 'planing' (spelling error). While the vocabulary is adequate for the task, it is mostly functional. To improve, try to incorporate more descriptive adjectives and idiomatic expressions that are natural in informal correspondence, which would demonstrate a more flexible control of language.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'It has been a long time since we meet last time' (should be 'met'), 'you mention' (should be 'mentioned'), and 'I am more certain that you enjoy' (should be 'I am certain you will enjoy'). While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede communication. To improve, focus on verb tense consistency and subject-verb agreement. Increasing the variety of complex structures while maintaining accuracy will help you achieve a higher score.
