Student answer (Band 6.0)

DEAR STEVE

I AM SO GLAD TO KNOW THAT YOU TOOK A SUMMER HOLIDAY TO EXPERICIENCING CAMPING ADVANTURE. SINCE THIS IS YOUR FIRST CAMPING AND YOU ASKED FOR MY ADVISE I AM MORE THAN HAPPY TO SHARE SOME.

THIS WILL BE GOING TO LIFE-TIME MEMORY FOR YOU AS YOU WILL BE LIVING IN A NATURE OUTSIDE THE CONCRETE JUNGLE. YOU WILL BE BREATHING FRESH AIR, EXPLORING PLACES/LOCATION BY TRACKING WHICH WILL BE GOOD FOR PHYSICAL HEALTH. MOST IMPORTANTLY YOU ARE GOING TO EXPERIENCE PSYCOLOGICAL PEACE.

HOWEVER, IT BRINGS SOME DRAWBACKS FOR YOU SUCH AS UNCOMFORTABLENESS FOR SLEEPING, COOKING ON A STOVE, PRITECTION FROM ATTACK OF WILD ANIMAL,GETTING LOST IN WOODS. BUT ALL THESE CAN BE MANAGED.

UNFORTUNATILLY, I WON'T BE ABLE TO JOIN YOU AS I HAVE TO TAKE CARE OF MY 3 YEARS DAUGHTER. BUT WE CAN PLAN THIS FOR NEXT SUMMER.

HAVE A WONDERFUL ADVANTURE.

BEST WISHES,

MIKE

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: explaining the benefits of camping, describing potential disadvantages, and explaining your inability to join the trip. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend. However, the development of ideas is somewhat brief. For example, while you mention 'psychological peace' and 'physical health', these points could be expanded with more specific examples to better engage the reader. Additionally, the use of capital letters throughout the entire response is inappropriate for a formal or semi-formal letter and affects the overall presentation of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, each addressing a specific part of the prompt. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'however' and 'unfortunately' to signal shifts in the narrative. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes mechanical, and the lack of varied transition words makes the writing feel a bit repetitive. Paragraphing is present, but the overall structure could be improved by using more sophisticated linking phrases to connect your ideas more fluidly. The use of all-caps makes the text difficult to read and disrupts the natural flow of the letter.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'concrete jungle', 'psychological peace', and 'drawbacks'. However, there are several spelling errors throughout the text, such as 'EXPERICIENCING', 'ADVANTURE', 'ADVISE' (used as a noun instead of 'advice'), 'PSYCOLOGICAL', 'PRITECTION', and 'UNFORTUNATILLY'. These errors are frequent and occasionally distract the reader. To reach a higher band, you need to ensure accurate spelling and use more precise collocations. The vocabulary is functional but lacks the flexibility and precision required for higher band scores.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'Since this is your first camping and you asked for my advice, I am more than happy to share some.' However, there are frequent grammatical errors, including issues with verb forms ('to experiencing'), article usage ('in a nature'), and subject-verb agreement. The sentence 'This will be going to life-time memory' is awkward and grammatically incorrect. While the meaning is generally clear, the high frequency of errors in basic grammar and punctuation (including the use of all-caps) limits your score in this criterion.
