Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Navjodh,

I hope you are doing well. I am very happy that you wanna experience camping holiday for the first time this summer. I believe that this would be your best memory and you will enjoy this alot.

Camping is very interesting and it is so much fun and you can do so many things there. It would be so nice when you cook your own food and have beautiful fireplace with music and dance.

I know you are very sensible and mature but make sure you keep your personal stuff safe especially if you going with other friends and also fire make sure when you will cook, fire will be under control.

I am thinking of this that i also don't have any plans for this summer so we can go together and have fun there. We can spend some time together, I have so many things to tell you.

I will wait for you response. Please let me know when we will go so, I do all my packing before that.

Regards,

Ravneet

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have addressed all three bullet points of the task. You explained why your friend would enjoy camping, mentioned potential disadvantages (safety and fire control), and expressed interest in joining them. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend. However, the development of ideas is somewhat basic. For instance, the disadvantages are mentioned briefly without much elaboration. To reach a higher band, you should expand on your points with more detail or examples. For example, instead of just mentioning 'personal stuff,' you could explain the importance of keeping valuables secure in a tent environment. Overall, the response is relevant and covers the requirements sufficiently.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your ideas. You use basic cohesive devices like 'I believe that' and 'I know you are,' which provide a clear structure. However, the flow between some sentences is a bit mechanical, and there is a lack of more sophisticated linking words or referencing. For example, the transition between the advice about safety and your suggestion to join the trip is quite abrupt. Improving the use of cohesive devices to connect your thoughts more fluidly would enhance the overall coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

Your vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing you to communicate your message clearly. You use common words effectively, such as 'sensible,' 'mature,' and 'experience.' However, the range is somewhat limited, and there is a reliance on simple, repetitive phrasing like 'very interesting' and 'so much fun.' To improve, try to incorporate more descriptive adjectives and precise collocations. For example, instead of 'very interesting,' you could use 'an invigorating experience.' There are also minor informal slips like 'wanna,' which should be avoided in favor of 'want to' to maintain a consistent, appropriate tone.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While you can communicate your ideas, there are several grammatical errors throughout the text. For example, 'I am very happy that you wanna experience camping holiday' is missing an article ('a'), and 'if you going' should be 'if you are going.' Additionally, 'fire will be under control' is slightly awkward phrasing. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles will help improve your accuracy.
