Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Mike,

I hope you are doing great, I heard that you are going on a camping vacation, and it is your first time this summer, so you asked me for some advice.

First and foremost, Let me tell you that you are going to really enjoy your time there on camping, because you are going to see animals for the first time in front of you and you can approach them to pet them safely, they cause no harm. Then, I totally guarantee that you will have fun being among your friends.

But, be careful! You might suffer from the direct sun light, so try to have with you some ointments to protect you from sun heat. Plus, you might need some insects sprays, as there you probably got attacked by a lot of flying and crawling insects.

I will try to take a week off my work to come along, If I get the approval for my a week off, I will immediately hit you up to inform you, so we can have fun.

I hope my advice will help, and If you need any further information, don't hesitate to give me a call.

Best regards,

Jake Tom

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You explained why your friend would enjoy camping, described potential disadvantages like sun exposure and insects, and confirmed your interest in joining. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend. However, the advice regarding approaching wild animals to 'pet them safely' is somewhat unrealistic and potentially dangerous, which slightly weakens the quality of the ideas. To improve, ensure your suggestions are grounded in common sense or practical experience. Overall, the task requirements are fully met, and the letter maintains a consistent, friendly tone throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized with clear paragraphing that separates the different requirements of the task. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'First and foremost', 'Then', and 'But' to guide the reader through your points. While the flow is generally good, some transitions feel a bit mechanical. To reach a higher band, try to vary your linking words and ensure that the connection between sentences is smoother. For instance, the transition between the benefits of camping and the disadvantages could be more sophisticated. Overall, the structure is clear and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task, using words like 'vacation', 'guarantee', and 'hesitate' correctly. However, there are some instances of slightly unnatural word choices, such as 'direct sun light' instead of 'sun exposure' or 'sunburn', and 'insects sprays' instead of 'insect repellent'. Additionally, the phrase 'hit you up' is very informal; while acceptable for a friend, it lacks the precision expected in higher-scoring responses. Expanding your vocabulary to include more specific collocations related to outdoor activities would enhance your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'there you probably got attacked' (should be 'you might get attacked') and 'my a week off' (an unnecessary 'my'). Punctuation is generally functional, though there are some comma splices, such as in the opening sentence. Despite these errors, the meaning remains clear throughout the letter. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and avoiding redundant articles or pronouns. The majority of your sentences are understandable, which is a positive foundation.
