Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Rose,

I hope you are doing well. As you told me next week you are going for camping with your family at the Blue Mountain, which will be great opportunity for you as it will give you a chance to explore a new place.

Camping is one of the most fun outdoor activities. As it will give you a chance to get a experience of the activities like Mountain Climbing, Rafting so on. The best thing I ever experience during camping is gazing open and peaceful sky for hours. Moreover, as you are too foody hence you will enjoy the cooking outside along with Bonfire.

Although camping seems to be full of fun and excitement, sudden weather change can impact your whole plan. So, it's my suggestion that please take solid and waterproof tents, gear, compass, map of particular place and atleast 2 pair of comfortable shoes with you as these things will be helpful for you during your camping.

I would love to join you for camping but I have some other plans for next week. I do not know if you remember my cousin Julia she is coming from America next week for her friend's marriage and she insisted me to join her during whole event. As a result, it is hard for me to accompany you at camping.

I hope you will understand my situation and will consider my given suggestion.

Thank you

Lily

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The letter addresses all three bullet points of the prompt effectively. You clearly explain why your friend would enjoy camping, identify potential disadvantages (weather), and provide a logical reason for declining the invitation. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend. The ideas are well-developed, though some phrasing is slightly informal or repetitive. To reach a higher band, ensure that the connection between the points is more seamless and avoid minor inaccuracies in the task instructions, such as the tense usage when describing the upcoming trip. Overall, the response is fully relevant and meets the requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with clear paragraphing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your ideas easily. You use some cohesive devices like 'Although', 'Moreover', and 'As a result' to link your thoughts. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive. For instance, the use of 'As' at the beginning of multiple sentences could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words or phrases to enhance the flow. The progression of ideas is clear, and the overall structure is sound.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using words like 'opportunity', 'peaceful', and 'insisted'. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'you are too foody' (should be 'a foodie') and 'give you a experience' (should be 'give you an experience'). Additionally, 'for camping' is often better expressed as 'camping' or 'a camping trip'. While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precise control over common collocations and word forms to reach a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as the conditional 'I do not know if you remember...' and the concessive clause 'Although camping seems to be...'. However, there are several grammatical slips throughout the text, including article usage ('at the Blue Mountain' should be 'at the Blue Mountains'), subject-verb agreement, and preposition errors ('insisted me to join' should be 'insisted that I join'). While these errors are noticeable, they do not prevent the reader from understanding your message. Increasing the frequency of error-free complex sentences would improve your score.
