Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Sarah,

I am so pleased to hear that you are going for camping holiday this summer for the first time. I really think you would enjoy a lot, and this could be a wonderful experience for you.

One of the best thing about camping is that you would breathe a fresh air, relax and get away from your usual routine. You would be able to spend some time with nature, and enjoy peace and quite of outdoors. It is also a great way to do fun activities such as hiking, swimming, or having barbeques in the evening. I know how much you like trying new things, so camping would probably be something exciting and memorable for you.

Of course, there are few disadvantages as well. The weather can be unpredictable, so if it rains, the whole trip can become uncomfortable. Also, sleeping in the tent is not easy, especially if you are not used to it. You might also have to deal with insects, and carrying heavy bags, which can be a bit annoying.

As for me, I would definitely like to go with you for camping this summer, if I am free. It would be much more enjoyable to share the experience with a friend, and I think we would have a lot of fun together. Let me know what you decide.

Best wishes,

Komal

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explained why your friend would enjoy camping, provided relevant disadvantages, and stated your interest in joining them. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, and the purpose of the letter is clear from the beginning. The ideas are well-developed and relevant to the context of a first-time camping trip. To reach a higher band, you could provide slightly more specific examples or personal anecdotes to make the advice feel more authentic and engaging.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The letter is logically organized, with each bullet point addressed in a separate paragraph. The progression of ideas is clear, moving smoothly from the benefits to the drawbacks and finally to your personal availability. You use a range of cohesive devices such as 'One of the best things', 'Also', and 'As for me' to link your ideas effectively. Paragraphing is used appropriately to structure the letter. The flow is natural, and the relationship between sentences is easy to follow throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary suitable for this informal task. Phrases like 'unpredictable', 'memorable', and 'usual routine' are used accurately. There are a few minor errors, such as 'breathe a fresh air' (should be 'breathe fresh air') and 'peace and quite' (should be 'peace and quiet'). While the vocabulary is sufficient and conveys your meaning well, incorporating a few more idiomatic expressions or less common collocations would help elevate the lexical range to a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most of your sentences are error-free, and your control of grammar is generally strong. There are a few minor slips, such as 'going for camping holiday' (should be 'going on a camping holiday') and 'there are few disadvantages' (should be 'there are a few disadvantages'). These errors are infrequent and do not impede communication. Your punctuation is generally accurate, and the overall control of grammar is consistent throughout the letter.
