Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Abhi,

I am writing regarding your first summer camping holiday and would like to give some recommendations about it. I am writing to explain the situation and provide some relevant information.

Firstly, you will enjoy this trip as you are fond of travelling and taking photos. In addition, do not forget to take your camera with you and always try to avoid touching any plants, as they have allergies. I believe that your opinion would be helpful in this situation.

Secondly, there are some cons of going there, as sometimes the weather is not good, so always check the weather before going there. Furthermore, the internet speed will also be low there. I would appreciate it if you could take these things in mind before going.

Finally, I would love to go with you, but I have classes on these days, so I cannot join you. Hopefully you will enjoy it a lot. I hope that this matter can be resolved as soon as possible.

Thank you for asking me about your trip. I would be grateful if you could check, and I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Yours faithfully,

[Your Name]

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have addressed all three bullet points required by the prompt. You explained why your friend would enjoy camping, mentioned disadvantages like weather and internet connectivity, and clarified your inability to join. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat superficial. For example, the explanation of why your friend would enjoy it is quite brief. Additionally, the tone is inconsistent; while it is a letter to a friend, some phrases like 'I hope that this matter can be resolved as soon as possible' sound overly formal and bureaucratic, which is inappropriate for a friendly letter. To improve, ensure your tone is consistently informal and expand on your points with more personal detail.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each focusing on one of the required points. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'Finally' to structure your response. While this makes the progression clear, the use of these markers is somewhat mechanical. The referencing is generally clear, though some transitions between sentences within paragraphs feel a bit abrupt. To reach a higher band, try to use a wider variety of linking words and ensure that the flow between sentences is more natural rather than relying solely on list-like transitions.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

Your vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing you to communicate your ideas clearly. You use some relevant terms like 'recommendations', 'travelling', and 'connectivity'. However, there are some awkward collocations and word choices. For instance, 'as they have allergies' is grammatically confusing in context, and 'take these things in mind' should be 'keep these things in mind'. The range of vocabulary is somewhat limited and lacks the flexibility needed for higher bands. Focusing on more precise collocations and idiomatic expressions suitable for informal correspondence would significantly improve your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors. For example, 'as sometimes the weather is not good' is a bit simplistic, and 'I have classes on these days' is slightly unnatural. There are also minor punctuation and phrasing issues throughout. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. To improve, focus on ensuring subject-verb agreement and refining your use of complex sentence structures to ensure they are error-free.
