Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Noor,

I hope you are doing well. I got a letter yesterday from you and I am really excited that you are planning to go for a comping holiday this summer. You will definitely enjoy this camping as you are an adventures person who likes having risky rides and water parks.

There might be some difficulties as you have mosquito allergy you must carry a mosquito spray with you while camping. Also, you need to pack everything like water bottle, tents, two or three pair of clothes , ready to eat food rest I know you will manage. Also, the networks there are not very proper so you can take a small radio with you in case of emergency.

I would like to come with you but unfortunately I have an urgent work in those days but i would suggest you to go for Johnson Canyon hike as you are going for first time that camping hike is little easy.

I hope you enjoy this camping.

See you soon

Yours Friendly

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: explaining why your friend would enjoy camping, describing potential disadvantages, and stating whether you can join them. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For example, while you mention the mosquito allergy, you could have expanded more on the practicalities of camping life or the specific benefits of the experience to make the letter more engaging. The response is clear and fulfills the requirements of the task effectively, though it remains quite brief in its exploration of the points.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter follows a logical progression, moving from the excitement of the trip to advice and finally to your availability. Paragraphing is used, though the structure could be improved by separating the advice into a more distinct section. You use some cohesive devices like 'Also' and 'but', but these are somewhat repetitive. To reach a higher band, try to vary your linking words and phrases (e.g., 'Furthermore', 'On the other hand', 'Consequently') to improve the flow between sentences and ideas. Overall, the message is easy to follow, and the organization is sufficient for this task.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You use a functional range of vocabulary suitable for a friendly letter. There are some minor errors, such as 'comping' instead of 'camping' and 'adventures person' instead of 'adventurous person'. Phrases like 'risky rides' and 'not very proper' are understandable but slightly unnatural in this context. To improve, focus on using more precise adjectives and collocations. While your vocabulary is adequate to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the flexibility and sophistication required for higher bands. Expanding your repertoire of descriptive language would enhance the quality of your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical slips, such as 'I have an urgent work' (should be 'urgent work' or 'an urgent task'), 'you are going for first time' (missing 'the'), and 'that camping hike is little easy' (should be 'a little easy'). Punctuation is generally functional, though there are some missing commas and capitalization issues. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on article usage and subject-verb agreement will help improve your accuracy.
