Student answer (Band 5.0)

Dear Aman,

How are you, i am so glad for you that you are going for camping this year. In my opinion, camping will be ideal for you, due to several reasons, first you feel will the nature, you always like to meditate on hills, it will be good for your mental health. Futhermore, you will feel independent, by yourself, you will feel beyond your limits, you learn how to survive alone. However; do not forget any time, because at “shimla Hills” weather is unexciting, sometime it sunny and any time it will rainy. Moreover, this will be great time for us to enjoy and create memories, but cannot join you, because of my exams.

Hope you have a wonderful time.

Your faithfully

Avtar

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The letter addresses all three bullet points: explaining why the friend would enjoy camping, describing disadvantages, and declining the invitation. However, the response is significantly under the 150-word minimum, which limits the development of ideas. The points are mentioned but not fully extended or supported with sufficient detail. For instance, the reasons for enjoying camping are brief, and the explanation of the disadvantages is somewhat unclear due to language errors. To improve, you should expand on your points by providing more specific examples or personal anecdotes to meet the length requirement and provide a more comprehensive response.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The letter has a basic structure, but the lack of paragraphing makes it difficult to follow the progression of ideas. While you use some cohesive devices like 'Furthermore' and 'However', their usage is sometimes mechanical or inaccurate, such as the semicolon after 'However'. The flow between sentences is occasionally disjointed, which hinders the overall coherence of the letter. To improve, ensure you use clear paragraph breaks for each main point and use a wider variety of linking words more naturally to connect your ideas logically.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is somewhat limited and repetitive. There are several instances of awkward word choices, such as 'feel will the nature' instead of 'connect with nature' and 'weather is unexciting' instead of 'unpredictable'. These errors occasionally impede the clarity of your message. To reach a higher band, you should aim to use more precise vocabulary and idiomatic expressions appropriate for a friendly letter. Focus on learning collocations, such as 'unpredictable weather' or 'mental well-being', rather than relying on basic descriptive terms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response contains frequent grammatical errors, including issues with subject-verb agreement ('you feel will the nature'), punctuation (incorrect use of semicolons and commas), and sentence structure. There is a lack of complex sentence structures, and the errors in basic grammar occasionally cause confusion for the reader. For example, 'do not forget any time' is unclear. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence construction, ensuring correct verb tenses, and practicing the proper use of punctuation marks like commas and periods to separate your thoughts clearly.
