Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Anna
How are you doing and how is mummy and Caleb, I have missed hearing from them and I hope they are doing well. I got your message and I am so excited you brought the idea of a camping to me.
the last 3 years has been very tasking and overhauling for you, since you got a different job as an accountant. Honestly I think you deserve a break, not just a break but a proper holiday for the first time this summer. you need to unburden, to relax, to connect with persons and to build your emotional and mental stability.
I understand going for this summer holiday will mean you have to leave your son Caleb behind for your mum. I understand that you really looked forward to spending quality time with him this summer but I need you to understand that it is okay to be a little selfish when it comes to your well being especially your mental and emotional health. I would also love to go on the camping with you.best friends holiday together. let me know the colours of dresses and hats you would be taking to camp, I would love to have the same thing on myself. lets twin together.
let me know what you decide on, I hope to get a response from you as soon as you can in order for us to commence our planning.
with love,
Ada

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The letter addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You explain why your friend would enjoy camping, mention the disadvantage of leaving her son behind, and confirm your interest in joining. However, the response lacks a description of the actual disadvantages of camping itself (e.g., lack of facilities, weather, or insects), focusing instead on the personal emotional challenge of leaving a child. While this is relevant, it misses the opportunity to discuss the practical aspects of a camping holiday. The tone is appropriate for a friendly letter, but the development of the 'disadvantages' section is somewhat limited.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is generally coherent, and the paragraphing is logical. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'Honestly', 'I understand', and 'However', to link ideas. However, the flow between sentences is occasionally mechanical, and some transitions are abrupt. For instance, the jump from discussing the friend's mental health to the logistics of camping clothes is quite sudden. The use of referencing is generally clear, but the overall structure could benefit from more sophisticated linking words to improve the flow between the different requirements of the task.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using phrases like 'emotional and mental stability' and 'commence our planning'. There are some minor errors in word choice, such as 'overhauling' (which is not used correctly in this context) and 'persons' (where 'people' would be more natural). The vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, but it lacks the precision and variety required for a higher band. The repetition of 'I understand' at the start of consecutive sentences also limits the lexical variety.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'the last 3 years has been' (should be 'have been'), 'brought the idea of a camping to me' (should be 'suggested camping to me'), and punctuation issues like 'best friends holiday together' (which is a fragment). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. You show an attempt at complex sentences, but control over subject-verb agreement and punctuation needs improvement.
