You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Dear ................. ,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Lavanya,

First of all, thank you for taking the time to contact me about the recent camping trip you are about to take, and it does seem very interesting to me. I am certain that this trip will be one of the best trips you have ever taken, and hopefully you will have a spectacular time visiting the camp. I think you are going to have an amazing time because of how good the weather is nowadays; it's always adventurous to go out by yourself and spend some time at the camping site out there. I really hope you'll make some s'mores for yourself as a little bit of treat, but don't forget about me. Always make sure that you're at a crowded spot with other tourists, as a wild animal may come near or it may rain. I would love to join you next year and have a flawless time.

Best Regards,

NK

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The letter addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt. You explain why your friend would enjoy camping, mention potential disadvantages like wild animals and rain, and express your interest in joining them. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat superficial. For instance, the advice to stay in a 'crowded spot' is a bit vague and does not fully explore the practical challenges of camping. To improve, try to provide more specific details or personal anecdotes to flesh out your points. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, maintaining a friendly and informal register throughout the response.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is coherent and follows a logical progression. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'First of all' and 'However' (implied by the transition to disadvantages). However, the paragraphing is non-existent; the entire letter is written as a single block of text. For a formal or semi-formal letter, it is essential to use clear paragraph breaks to separate the different points (introduction, body paragraphs for each bullet point, and conclusion). Improving your paragraphing and using a wider variety of linking words would significantly enhance the flow and structure of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task. Phrases like 'spectacular time' and 'flawless time' are used effectively. However, there are some minor issues with word choice and collocation. For example, 'contact me about the recent camping trip you are about to take' is slightly awkward, as you cannot be contacted about a future event in this way. Additionally, 'visiting the camp' is less natural than 'going camping'. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more precise collocations and idiomatic expressions that sound more natural to a native speaker.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most of your sentences are clear and easy to follow, though there are some minor grammatical slips. For instance, 'thank you for taking the time to contact me about the recent camping trip you are about to take' is a bit repetitive. The sentence 'as a wild animal may come near or it may rain' is grammatically correct but could be more sophisticated. You have good control over basic punctuation, but ensure that your complex sentences are punctuated correctly to avoid run-on structures. Overall, your grammar is functional and does not impede communication.
