Student answer (Band 8.0)
Dear Sarah,
I hope you are doing well. I was really pleased to hear that you are planning to go on a camping holiday this summer. I think you would really enjoy the experience because it would give you a chance to relax and spend some time in nature.
Firstly, camping is a great way to escape from your usual routine. You could enjoy the fresh air, beautiful scenery and activities such as hiking and swimming. It would also be a good opportunity to meet new people and make some wonderful memories.
However, there are a few disadvantages to consider. The weather can be unpredictable, and heavy rain could make camping rather uncomfortable. In addition, sleeping in a tent may not be as comfortable as staying in a hotel, and insects could also be a problem.
As for me, I would definitely love to go camping with you this summer. I think it would be much more enjoyable if we went together. We could choose a campsite near a lake and spend a few days hiking and relaxing.
Let me know what you think. I hope we can plan this trip soon!
Best wishes,
Roma patel

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
The response fully addresses all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explain why camping is enjoyable, provide specific disadvantages such as unpredictable weather and insects, and confirm your interest in joining the trip. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, and the purpose is clear throughout. The ideas are well-developed and relevant, meeting the requirements for a Band 8.0. To reach a higher band, you could provide even more specific, personal details about the proposed trip to further extend the ideas.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each point, and a natural conclusion. You use cohesive devices effectively, such as 'Firstly', 'In addition', and 'As for me', which guide the reader through the text smoothly. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different aspects of the task. The flow of ideas is logical and easy to follow, demonstrating a good command of organizational features.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your ideas with precision. Phrases like 'escape from your usual routine', 'unpredictable', and 'wonderful memories' are used naturally and accurately. While the vocabulary is appropriate and effective for this task, it remains relatively standard. To achieve a higher band, you could incorporate more sophisticated collocations or idiomatic expressions that sound more natural in an informal letter, such as 'rough it' or 'get back to basics'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.0
The writing displays a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. You use modal verbs correctly ('would enjoy', 'could choose') and maintain consistent control over tense and subject-verb agreement. The punctuation is accurate, and there are no significant grammatical errors that impede communication. The majority of your sentences are error-free, which is a strong indicator of a high level of grammatical control. The writing is clear and flows well throughout.
