Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Lakshika,

I hope this letter finds you well. I am really happy to know that you planning to go for a camping holiday this summer. You are going to have the best time of your life as I know how much you love being in the nature.Another reason I think you would love the experience is because you are going to be miles away from the city's busy life, since you needed it for a while.

However, be aware from the wild animals because they can easily smell the food from far distances, specially the famous grizzly bears of our province are a big threat to the campers. Also, It would be a blast if we could go together for a camp in this summer as, I am going book a spot just next to the famous six miles lake. don't forget to share your experience and beautiful pictures when you come back from the trip.

With love,

Abhishek

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You explained why your friend would enjoy camping, identified a clear disadvantage (wildlife threats), and confirmed your interest in joining the trip. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend. However, the development of ideas is somewhat brief. For instance, while you mention the city's busy life, expanding slightly on the specific benefits of nature or the relaxation aspect would have provided a more fully developed response. Overall, the task is fulfilled effectively, and the purpose of the letter is clear throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter follows a logical progression, moving from the positive aspects to the warnings and finally the invitation. Paragraphing is used, though the second paragraph is quite dense and could have been split to separate the warning from the invitation. You use some cohesive devices like 'However' and 'Also', but the flow is occasionally slightly mechanical. Referencing is generally clear, though the transition between the warning about bears and the invitation to go camping is a bit abrupt. Improving the use of linking phrases would help the ideas connect more naturally.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'best time of your life' and 'miles away from the city's busy life' are natural. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'be aware from' (should be 'be aware of') and 'go for a camp' (should be 'go camping'). While you use some descriptive language, incorporating a few more precise or less common lexical items would elevate the score. The vocabulary is adequate for the task and communication is never impeded.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'you planning to go' (missing auxiliary 'are'), 'being in the nature' (should be 'being in nature'), and 'I am going book' (missing 'to'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, with missing spaces after commas and periods, such as 'life, since' and 'camp in this summer as, I'. While these errors are noticeable, they do not prevent the reader from understanding your meaning. Focusing on proofreading for small omissions like articles and auxiliary verbs will significantly improve your accuracy.
