Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Amy,

I hope you are doing well! I am happy to know from your last letter that you are going for a camping holiday and thank you for asking me to advice you regarding that. first of all you gonna enjoy this trip because Shimla is very beautiful city. In addition to this you are going first time with your friends this trip is going to be most adventurous.

As there is some demerits of going there please be careful about that as I know you never drive in now and this time there is snow season going on please not get risk in there to drive.Additionally, you told me you will do camping on mountains be careful from slippery zone specially at night time and buy one pair of snow shoes with good grip.

Moving ahead,I cannot go with you on this trip as I m going I business trip this weekend jog is essential for my business therefore, I cannot miss that. Enjoy your trip.

Yours lovingly,

Sukhanjeet

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The letter addresses all three bullet points: explaining why the friend would enjoy camping, describing disadvantages, and stating whether you can join. However, the development of these points is somewhat limited. For example, the explanation of why the friend would enjoy the trip is brief and relies on the location (Shimla) rather than the nature of camping itself. The disadvantages are specific but the language used to describe them is slightly confusing, particularly the advice regarding driving and the 'slippery zone'. To improve, you should expand on your ideas with more descriptive language and ensure the advice provided is clear and logical for the reader.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is organized into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. You use some cohesive devices such as 'In addition to this', 'Additionally', and 'Moving ahead'. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes mechanical, and the logical progression is occasionally hindered by grammatical errors. For instance, the transition between the benefits of the trip and the warnings about driving is abrupt. Using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph focuses on one clear theme would improve the overall coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for a personal letter, but it lacks the range and precision required for a higher band. There are some awkward word choices, such as 'advice you' (should be 'advise'), 'demerits' (which is quite formal and slightly unnatural in this context), and 'jog' (which seems to be a typo for 'job'). The phrase 'slippery zone' is also not the most natural collocation. To improve, focus on using more natural, idiomatic expressions suitable for a letter to a friend and ensure that your word choices are accurate and contextually appropriate.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

There is a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures, but the accuracy is inconsistent. You have frequent errors in punctuation, such as missing commas after introductory phrases and run-on sentences (e.g., 'first of all you gonna enjoy...'). There are also errors in verb tense and subject-verb agreement, such as 'you are going first time' (should be 'for the first time') and 'I m going I business trip' (should be 'on a business trip'). These errors occasionally impede the flow of reading, though the overall meaning remains clear.
