Student answer (Band 8.0)
Dear Alex,
I’m glad to hear that you are thinking about going camping for the first time this summer. I think you would really enjoy it because you love nature and outdoor activities. Camping is a great way to relax, get away from the busy city, and spend time in the fresh air. You can also go hiking, cook outdoors, and enjoy beautiful views.
However, there are some disadvantages. The weather can change suddenly, and rain can make camping uncomfortable. You may also have problems with insects, cold nights, and limited access to showers or electricity. Sleeping in a tent may also be difficult at first.
I would definitely like to go camping with you this summer. It would be fun to explore a new place together, and I could help you prepare everything we need. I’m sure we both would have a wonderful and memorable trip.
Best wishes,
Sam

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
The response fully addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly explain why your friend would enjoy camping, provide a balanced list of disadvantages, and confirm your interest in joining the trip. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, and the purpose is clear throughout. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, meeting the requirements of the task effectively. No parts of the prompt were omitted, and the response maintains a consistent focus on the topic.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each bullet point, and a closing. Each paragraph has a central theme, which helps the reader follow your ideas easily. You use simple but effective cohesive devices such as 'However', 'also', and 'because' to link your sentences. The progression of ideas is smooth, and the paragraphing is appropriate for a formal or semi-formal letter. The structure is clear and easy to navigate.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary that is well-suited to the context of a camping trip. Phrases like 'get away from the busy city', 'limited access', and 'memorable trip' are natural and accurate. While the vocabulary is functional and clear, it is somewhat standard. To reach a higher band, you could incorporate more precise or descriptive adjectives and collocations to add depth to your descriptions, such as 'unpredictable weather patterns' or 'the serenity of nature'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.0
Your grammar is very strong, with a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. The sentences are error-free, and your punctuation is used correctly throughout the letter. You demonstrate good control over verb tenses and modal verbs (e.g., 'would really enjoy', 'can change', 'could help'). Because the majority of your sentences are accurate and the structure is varied, this meets the criteria for a high band score in grammatical accuracy.
