Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Yemi,

Hello. I hope you are doing good. How is your sister's health. I hope she is recovering well. I'm writing this letter in regard to your request to counsel you on the camping vacation you are thinking of going this summer.

In all honesty, it is always fun to go for a camping holiday. And I believe you would love since you will be going during summer. The reason why is that, summer is time many individuals plan to go for holiday which will enable you to meet a lot of people with different culture which you have been longing to experience.

I have to inform you about this, there are some things you wouldn't like, because of the large crowd, the swimming used to be filled up that there will be no availability of space to stand and also you might have to deal with some annoying people.

I would have loved to go camping with you but due to my busy schedule at the office it won't be possible this year. I will definitely make plans for next summer.

Have lots of dear friend.

Your darling friend,

Rita.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: explaining why your friend would enjoy camping, describing potential disadvantages, and stating your availability to join. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend. However, the development of your ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the explanation regarding 'meeting people with different culture' is a bit vague and could have been expanded with more specific examples of camping activities. Similarly, the disadvantages are mentioned but could be described with more detail to fully satisfy the requirement for a well-developed response. Overall, the task is fulfilled, but the depth of content is at a mid-range level.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is organized into clear paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your train of thought. You use some basic cohesive devices like 'In all honesty' and 'The reason why is that'. However, some transitions feel a bit mechanical or abrupt, such as the start of the third paragraph: 'I have to inform you about this'. The logical progression between sentences is generally clear, but the flow could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words to connect your ideas more naturally. The paragraphing is appropriate for a personal letter.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task, such as 'counsel', 'vacation', and 'availability'. However, there are some instances of unnatural phrasing or word choice, such as 'counsel you on the camping vacation' (which sounds overly formal or clinical for a friend) and 'the swimming used to be filled up'. Additionally, there are minor errors in collocation, such as 'Have lots of dear friend', which is not a standard closing. To reach a higher band, focus on using more natural collocations and idiomatic expressions suitable for informal correspondence.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors throughout the text. For example, 'I hope you are doing good' (should be 'well'), 'you would love since you will be going' (missing object 'it'), and 'summer is time many individuals plan' (missing article 'a'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with missing question marks in the opening paragraph. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your message, they occur frequently enough to impact the overall accuracy of your writing.
