Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Ali,

I am happy to hear that you are planning a camping holiday this summer. I think you would enjoy it because it is a great way to spend some time in nature and take a break from your busy routine. You can enjoy fresh air, beautifull views and outdoor activities. You can also cook food and sit together in the evening.

However, camping have some disadvantages. The weather ma be bad, especially it is rains. Sleeping in a tent can also be uncomfortable. There may not be proper bathrooms or other facillities, which can be difficult.

I would really like to go camping with you this summer. As it is your first time, I can help you proper everything. We can choose a good place and some simple food and necessary things. I am sure we will have a lot of fun together.

Best winshes,

Amad.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The letter addresses all three bullet points of the prompt, providing reasons for enjoying camping, potential disadvantages, and a clear offer to join the trip. However, the response is slightly under the 150-word minimum requirement, which impacts the overall development of ideas. While the points are relevant, they are somewhat brief and could have been expanded with more descriptive detail to fully satisfy the task requirements. Because the length is just under the threshold, the response is penalized in this criterion.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each corresponding to a specific bullet point. The progression of ideas is easy to follow. Cohesive devices such as 'However' and 'As it is your first time' are used effectively to link sentences. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend. To improve, you could use a wider variety of linking words to connect ideas within paragraphs more fluidly, as the current structure is somewhat simple and repetitive.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing for clear communication. You used some relevant topic-specific terms like 'nature', 'outdoor activities', and 'tent'. However, there are several spelling errors, such as 'beautifull', 'facillities', and 'winshes', which detract from the quality of the writing. To reach a higher band, you should aim to use a broader range of vocabulary and ensure accuracy in spelling, as these minor errors occur frequently enough to be noticeable.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response uses a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'camping have' (should be 'has'), 'especially it is rains' (should be 'especially if it rains'), and 'proper everything' (should be 'prepare everything'). These errors do not impede overall understanding, but they demonstrate a lack of control over basic subject-verb agreement and word forms. Increasing the variety of complex structures while focusing on accuracy would help improve your score in this area.
