Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Naren,

I hope you're doing well. It's been a while since we last spoke. I'm elated to know that you are interested in going on a camping trip for this summer vacation. I'm writing to give you an advice on how to select a proper camp site and the required essentials.

Firstly, I'm so sure that you will enjoy this camping holiday because you're very much into nature and scenic spots. Additionally, you would like the cooking experience in the camp site as it gives you the old-school cooking vibe while cooking on the wooden blocks in the firepits.

Although you feel the nature and capture the scenic views, there are some possible challenges that you will come across. One of the possible drawbacks is, you encounter various insects such as flies, mosquitoes and bugs which would create a significant inconvenience and discomfort.

Finally, I would like to join you for this summer trip as it's your first experience, I'm excited to help you in setting-up the tent and guiding you through out the trip. Simultaneously, I will also get a chance to spend some quality time with you.

Let me know your thoughts and lets catchup for dinner over the weekend to discuss further.

Best regards,

Raj kumar

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly explain why your friend would enjoy camping, identify specific disadvantages like insects, and confirm your willingness to join the trip. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, maintaining a friendly and informal register throughout. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, providing enough detail to satisfy the requirements of the task. To reach a higher band, ensure that the introduction focuses strictly on the prompt's requirements rather than adding unnecessary information about 'selecting a camp site,' which was not requested.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with clear paragraphing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task, which helps the reader follow your ideas easily. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Firstly,' 'Additionally,' 'Although,' and 'Finally' to link your points. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical. To improve, try to vary your linking words and ensure that the flow between sentences is more natural. For instance, the transition in the third paragraph could be smoother by better connecting the positive aspects of nature with the negative reality of insects.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary, using phrases like 'scenic spots,' 'significant inconvenience,' and 'quality time.' There are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'give you an advice' (advice is uncountable) and 'wooden blocks in the firepits' (which is slightly unnatural phrasing). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the sophistication or precise collocation required for higher bands. Focusing on more natural collocations and avoiding minor grammatical errors with nouns will help improve your score in this area.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'I'm so sure that you will enjoy' (a bit informal/clunky), 'give you an advice' (article error), and 'guiding you through out' (should be 'throughout'). Additionally, there is a comma splice in the final paragraph: 'it's your first experience, I'm excited to help you.' Despite these errors, your meaning is always clear, and the grammar does not impede communication. Increasing the variety of complex structures and proofreading for minor errors would improve your performance.
