Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Naren,

I hope you're doing well. It's been a while since we last spoke. I'm elated to know that you are interested in going on a camping trip for this summer vacation. I'm writing to give you advice on how to select a proper camp site and the required essentials.

Firstly, I'm so sure that you will enjoy this camping holiday because you're very much into nature and scenic spots. Additionally, you would like the cooking experience in the camp site as it gives you the old-school cooking vibe while cooking on the wooden blocks in the firepits.

Although you feel the nature and capture the scenic views, there are some possible challenges that you will come across. One of the possible drawbacks is, you encounter various insects such as flies, mosquitoes and bugs which would create a significant inconvenience and discomfort.

Finally, I would like to join you for this summer trip as it's your first experience, I'm excited to help you in setting-up the tent and guiding you throughout the trip. Simultaneously, I will also get a chance to spend some quality time with you.

Let me know your thoughts and let's catchup for dinner over the weekend to discuss further.

Best regards,

Raj kumar

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explain why your friend would enjoy camping, identify specific disadvantages like insects, and confirm your willingness to join the trip. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, and the purpose is clear throughout. To reach a higher band, ensure that your ideas are slightly more developed; for instance, when mentioning the 'old-school cooking vibe,' you could briefly explain why this is a positive experience. Overall, the response is well-focused and meets all requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each bullet point, and a concluding paragraph. You use cohesive devices such as 'Firstly,' 'Additionally,' 'Although,' and 'Finally' to guide the reader through your points. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate distinct ideas. While the flow is generally smooth, some transitions could be more sophisticated to avoid a slightly mechanical feel. For example, the transition between the benefits and the drawbacks is clear, but the connection between the final paragraph and the preceding text could be more seamless.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for a semi-formal/informal letter. Phrases like 'elated to know,' 'scenic spots,' and 'significant inconvenience' show a good level of control. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'wooden blocks' (which sounds unnatural; 'firewood' or 'logs' would be better) and 'setting-up the tent' (which is slightly redundant). However, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly and with some precision. You show an awareness of style, which is appropriate for this task type.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as the conditional 'if' clause and the use of 'although' to introduce a concession. While there are some minor grammatical slips—such as 'I'm so sure that you will enjoy' (a bit informal/clunky) and the comma splice in the final paragraph ('...first experience, I'm excited...')—these errors do not impede communication. Your control over punctuation and sentence structure is generally good, and you successfully use a variety of tenses to discuss past, present, and future events.
