Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear John,

I am writing this letter to inform you that, I got to know that you are going for a summer trip this year. You will be happy to know that Fortunately, this summer I have vacations during same period of time. Let’s plan together, In my perception, we will rock the season. I am so excited because I already visited that area of Usa about a month ago due to my office work. Unfortunately, there are some traffic issues or we have to rent a car because travelling with local bus service would be time consuming.

Additionally, I want to let you know that we have to pack additional clothing, I heard that night time the temperature is down there so to avoid any health related problems we have to be very conscious. Furthermore, cooking items or useful stuff we are going to pack together. I think we should take some tent ropes as well.

All n all I am so excited for this trip. I will see you on May 24, 2027 at 9am. Second day of my vacation.

Miss you my friend.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have addressed all three bullet points, but the development of your ideas is somewhat limited. While you mention why your friend would enjoy camping, the explanation is vague. You describe potential disadvantages like traffic and temperature, but these are presented as logistical notes rather than a balanced discussion of the camping experience. The tone is informal and friendly, which is appropriate for the task, but the content lacks the depth required for a higher band. To improve, ensure you expand on your reasons—for example, explain the benefits of nature or the specific challenges of camping in more detail to fully satisfy the prompt's requirements.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is organized into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is sometimes mechanical or slightly awkward, such as 'All n all' and 'Additionally'. The transition between the introduction and the body paragraphs is a bit abrupt. While the progression of ideas is generally logical, the connection between sentences could be smoother. For instance, the jump from discussing the trip to mentioning specific packing items feels disjointed. Using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph focuses on a single, well-developed idea would enhance the flow of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

Your vocabulary is adequate for the task, but it is somewhat basic and repetitive. Phrases like 'useful stuff' and 'health related problems' are functional but lack precision. There are also some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'I already visited that area' (should be 'I have already visited') and 'vacations during same period' (missing an article). To achieve a higher score, try to incorporate more specific vocabulary related to travel and camping, such as 'scenic,' 'amenities,' 'unpredictable weather,' or 'essential gear,' rather than relying on general terms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally distract the reader. For example, 'I got to know that you are going' is a bit informal and wordy. There are punctuation issues, such as comma splices ('...trip this year. You will be happy to know that Fortunately...'). Additionally, there are errors with articles ('the Usa', 'the same period') and verb tenses ('I already visited' instead of 'I have already visited'). While these errors do not prevent communication, they occur frequently enough to limit your score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and proper punctuation will help improve your accuracy.
