Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Anil,

I hope you're doing very well. I am gald you asked for my advice on the camping holiday you have planned for this summer.

I believe you'd really enjoy this holday as it is your first time going for such an adventurous activity. It will not only help you experience the excitement of camping but also act as a cathartic outlet for stress.

However, such holidays are not like other usual holdays where we check-in in a hotel and have access to all the basic amenities. While camping, you have to set up your own camp and carry all essential supplies with you.

Guess what! I think I can also join you to go camping. As I have previous experience in same, I can guide you on camping during the holiday and prevent any formidable situation.

Kindly share the details with me so that I can join you on the starting point on the day of camping.

Best wishes,

Rashpal

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly explain why your friend would enjoy camping, identify the lack of hotel amenities as a disadvantage, and confirm your interest in joining. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend. To improve, you could expand slightly on the 'why'—for example, by mentioning specific benefits of nature or the outdoors—to ensure the ideas are fully developed rather than just stated. Overall, the response is well-focused and meets the requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each point, and a closing. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different requirements of the task. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'However' and 'not only... but also', which help the flow of ideas. To reach a higher band, you could use a wider variety of linking words to connect sentences more fluidly, as some transitions feel slightly mechanical. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow throughout the letter.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using words like 'adventurous', 'cathartic', and 'amenities' correctly. There are a few spelling errors, such as 'gald' instead of 'glad' and 'holday' instead of 'holiday', which are minor but noticeable. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, incorporating more precise collocations or less common synonyms would elevate the response. For instance, instead of 'previous experience in same', a more natural phrasing would be 'previous experience with this'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as the conditional 'If I can join you...' and the 'not only... but also' construction. Most sentences are grammatically accurate and easy to understand. There are occasional errors, such as 'join you on the starting point' (should be 'at') and 'prevent any formidable situation' (where 'formidable' is not the most natural word choice in this context). However, these errors do not impede communication. To improve, focus on preposition usage and ensuring word choices are contextually appropriate.
