Student answer (Band 8.0)
Dear Anil,
I hope you're doing very well. I am glad you asked for my advice on the camping holiday you have planned for this summer.
I believe you'd really enjoy this holiday as it is your first time going for such an adventurous activity. You're always talking about how stressful work has been lately. This holiday will not only help you experience the excitement of camping but also act as a cathartic outlet for stress. Spending time outdoors while being surrounded by nature is amazing.
However, such holidays are not like other usual holidays where we check into a hotel and have access to all the basic amenities. While camping, you have to set up your own camp and carry all essential supplies with you. The weather could be unpredictable and you might encounter some poisonous plants and wild animals.
Guess what! I'd love to come along if you want to have me. As I have previous experience, I can guide you on the dos and don'ts of camping. Kindly share the details with me so that I can join you on the starting point on the day of camping.
Looking forward to meeting you soon.
Best wishes,
Rashpal

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
You have fully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explained the benefits of camping, such as stress relief and nature appreciation, provided realistic disadvantages like the lack of amenities and potential hazards, and expressed a clear willingness to join your friend. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, and the purpose is consistently clear throughout. The ideas are well-developed and relevant to the context of a first-time camping trip. You have successfully met all the requirements of the task.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which makes the structure easy to follow. You have used appropriate cohesive devices such as 'However', 'While', and 'As I have' to link your ideas effectively. The paragraphing is logical and contributes to the overall flow of the letter. The transition between the benefits of camping and the potential disadvantages is smooth, and the closing paragraph provides a natural conclusion to the correspondence.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.5
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary that is well-suited to the informal yet informative tone of the letter. Phrases like 'cathartic outlet for stress' and 'unpredictable' show a good command of language. While the vocabulary is generally accurate and natural, there is room to incorporate more sophisticated or idiomatic expressions to reach the highest bands. The word choices are precise and contribute to the clarity of your message without any noticeable errors in collocation or spelling.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.0
Your grammar is strong, with a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. You use conditional forms ('if you want to have me') and complex clauses effectively. The sentences are mostly error-free, and your punctuation is accurate throughout the text. There are no significant grammatical slips that impede communication. To improve further, you could experiment with a wider variety of complex structures, such as passive voice or more varied subordinate clauses, to demonstrate even greater flexibility in your writing.
