Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear shola,

I am writing this letter to give you information about how camping holidays can be because you told me you are considering visiting there this summer.

I believe you will love this camping holiday as it is a first time experience for you because there are several activities to engage in over there. During my stay in the camp we had a to-do-list daily. We have to be up before 8 am because to participate in the morning exercise session after that we take breakfast, go for praying and wait for the other tasks to be announced depending on the organizers schedules.

However, there are some drawbacks of visiting this place. firstly, the water in this camp is hard so I will advice you to go with an antiseptic. Another issue can also be the mosquitoes in this place so do not forget to take a mosquito nets and some socks with you, there are other things I do not remember currently.

I would have love to go on this journey with you but me and my family are planning to visit my aunt that had just delivered a twin boy and girl after 10 years of marriage. I hope you enjoy your vacation and whenever I remember any other details about the camping holiday I will let you know.

Kind regards,

Nurahh ogunlana.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You explained why your friend would enjoy camping, described potential disadvantages, and clearly stated that you cannot join them. The ideas are relevant and the tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited; for instance, the description of the 'to-do-list' is a bit repetitive and does not fully capture the appeal of camping. To improve, try to elaborate more on the benefits, such as the connection with nature or the relaxation aspect, rather than focusing solely on a rigid schedule.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized into paragraphs, each focusing on a specific requirement of the task. You use some cohesive devices like 'However' and 'firstly' to guide the reader. However, some transitions are a bit mechanical, and the flow between sentences could be smoother. For example, the transition between the morning exercise routine and the drawbacks is abrupt. Using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring that pronouns clearly refer back to their antecedents would help improve the overall flow and coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You use a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Words like 'considerable', 'drawbacks', and 'vacation' are used correctly. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'the water in this camp is hard' (which is ambiguous) and 'my aunt that had just delivered a twin' (should be 'given birth to twins'). Expanding your vocabulary to include more precise adjectives and idiomatic expressions would help you reach a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'I would have love to go' (should be 'loved'), 'I will advice you' (should be 'advise'), and 'a mosquito nets' (should be 'a mosquito net' or 'mosquito nets'). Additionally, there are some issues with subject-verb agreement and article usage. To improve, focus on proofreading for these common errors, particularly verb tenses and pluralization, to ensure your writing is more accurate.
