Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sarah,

I hope you are doing well. I read your letter that you sent on last week and I loved your idea of going on a summer vacation this year. I think this is first time so you might be nervous but do not worry I have a lot of experience in camping and i will guide you for this.

It is good to know that you are trying something new in your life. This will be your life's best decision. I can guarantee you, you will enjoy a camping holiday because you will see many different types of plants and flowers, the weather, the peace and many more. Although, there are some cons of camping. Most importantly, you must carry an bug or mosquito cream with you as at night there will be lot of insects in the forest. Also, carry a lamp or torch with you it will be very useful. Make sure that you check the weather forecast on your camping day. Because it might be a little rainy. I would suggest you to take a waterproof tent for that.

I would love to come with you to the camping but unfortunately i have a lot of work in my office as we are launching a new product in the market but make sure you send me your pictures. All the best for it and take care of yourself.

With love,

Kiya Patel

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You explained why your friend would enjoy camping, provided relevant disadvantages (insects, weather), and clearly stated your inability to join. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend. To improve, you could expand slightly on the 'why'—for example, instead of just listing 'plants and flowers,' you could describe the benefits of disconnecting from city life or the joy of campfire cooking. This would add more depth to your ideas and help you reach a higher band score by providing more fully developed supporting details.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for the main points, and a closing. You use basic cohesive devices like 'Although,' 'Also,' and 'Most importantly' to link your ideas. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes a bit mechanical. For instance, the transition between the benefits and the disadvantages could be smoother. Additionally, some paragraphing is slightly cramped; separating the advice on gear from the reasons for enjoying camping would improve the visual and logical structure of the letter. Overall, the progression of ideas is easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You use a functional range of vocabulary suitable for a friendly letter. Phrases like 'life's best decision' and 'waterproof tent' are accurate. However, there are some minor inaccuracies and awkward phrasings, such as 'an bug' (should be 'a bug') and 'carry an bug or mosquito cream' (the word 'cream' is less common than 'repellent'). To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more precise collocations and avoid repetitive structures. Your vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, but it lacks the sophistication and flexibility required for higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical errors. For example, 'I read your letter that you sent on last week' contains an unnecessary preposition ('on'). There are also punctuation issues, such as missing commas after introductory phrases and run-on sentences like '...nervous but do not worry I have a lot of experience.' Improving your control over sentence boundaries and reducing minor errors with articles and prepositions will help you achieve a higher score. You have a good foundation, but more attention to detail is needed.
