Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Anushka,

I hope you and your family are doing great! How is your final exams are going? I am writing this letter regarding your camping for this summer holidays.

To begin with, camping is always a fun wheather you go with a family or friends. I am sure that you are definitely going to enjoy your first ever camping. There are many things to experience such as trekking, campfire and many other adventure activities. I recommend your to take torch light and raincoat as the weather is uncertain sometime. On the other hand, there are demerits of camping, as you have to spend whole night in the tent, another thing some areas are open to wild animals which is dangerous.

So, make a list of all essential things to take on camping. And as you know I am in my final semester of the university, it's quite difficult for me to join. But for sure we plan a trip together this winter.

I hope you enjoy with your family and send me good pictures. Give my regards to your family.

See you soon,

Virat

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The letter covers all three bullet points required by the prompt. You explain why camping is enjoyable, mention the disadvantages of sleeping in tents and potential wildlife risks, and clarify your inability to join this summer while proposing a future trip. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend. To improve, you could expand slightly more on the 'why'—for example, by describing the peacefulness of nature or the joy of disconnecting from technology—to make the ideas feel more fully developed rather than just listed.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. You use basic cohesive devices like 'To begin with', 'On the other hand', and 'So' to transition between ideas. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes a bit mechanical. To reach a higher band, try to use a wider variety of linking words and ensure that the progression of ideas within paragraphs is smoother. For instance, the transition from the advice about equipment to the disadvantages of camping is a bit abrupt.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You use a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly, such as 'uncertain', 'demerits', and 'essential'. There are some minor word choice issues, such as 'camping is always a fun' (should be 'fun activity') and 'I recommend your to take' (should be 'I recommend that you take'). While the vocabulary is adequate for a friendly letter, incorporating more precise collocations or descriptive adjectives would enhance the quality of your writing and demonstrate a more flexible range.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text, such as 'How is your final exams are going?' (should be 'How are your final exams going?') and 'some areas are open to wild animals which is dangerous' (should be 'which are dangerous'). These errors do not impede communication, but they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and correct preposition usage will help improve your accuracy.
