Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Luis,

I hope all is well! I received your letter regarding the advice that you need for going on a camping holiday. I feel that this will be great opportunity for you to explore and enjoy the experience that you will receive from this camping tour. There will be alot of activities that you will have to do it yourself.

As this would be your first time camping, there might be some disadvantages that you might have to face, for example at night you will have to sleep in the portable tenant provided by the organizers which will not have fans or air conditioning and you will have to manage to sleep on the floor in the hot weather.

Thanks for inviting me for the summer camp. I would have love to come with you but unfortunately, I have already enrolled for variety of activities this summer such as swimming, guitar etc. Therefore, I will have no time during the entire summer. But I wish you all the best, enjoy the journey and safe travels.

I look forward to meeting you in the school when it reopens in fall.

Best Wishes,

Richard

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The letter covers all three bullet points required by the prompt. You explain why your friend would enjoy camping, describe potential disadvantages like the lack of climate control, and clearly state that you cannot join him. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited; for instance, the explanation of why he would enjoy it is quite brief and could be expanded with more specific details about the benefits of nature or the camping experience. Overall, the response is relevant and addresses the task requirements effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each focusing on a specific part of the prompt. The progression of ideas is easy to follow. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'As this would be', 'Therefore', and 'but', to link your thoughts. However, the transition between the first and second paragraphs could be smoother, and some sentences feel slightly disjointed. The use of paragraphing is appropriate for a formal-informal letter, and the overall structure supports the message well.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using words like 'enrolled', 'unfortunately', and 'portable'. There are some minor errors, such as 'portable tenant' (which should be 'tent') and 'alot' (which should be 'a lot'). While you successfully communicate your meaning, the vocabulary is generally functional rather than sophisticated. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more precise collocations or descriptive adjectives to enhance the quality of your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'I would have love to come with you but unfortunately, I have already enrolled...'. There are several grammatical slips, such as 'I would have love' (should be 'loved'), 'do it yourself' (the 'it' is redundant), and 'in the school' (should be 'at school'). While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede communication. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of modal verbs and prepositions.
