Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear John,
I hope everything is going well. I received your email and I am glad that you are planning to go on a camping holiday. As that is a wonderful activity which is really relaxing.
I went to the Algonquin park last summer and it was an amazing experience. I'd suggest you to there since it's not too far from your place. The views there are out of the world. Moreover, you can stay there for the night while enjoying the campfire.
Although it is a nice place for camping, it has a few cons. The camping site is very far and at a certain height which is tiring. You would have to walk all the way and one more thing to keep in mind is to keep extra water because you won't find it there.
Anyways I am also free next week if you like I could join you. We can also ask Amy it would be nice to have fun together. Let me know if you have any other plans.
best wishes,
Utsav

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You explained why your friend would enjoy camping, described the disadvantages (distance and lack of water), and confirmed your interest in joining. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend. To improve, you could provide more specific details to better develop your ideas. For example, when mentioning the 'cons,' you could elaborate on how the lack of water impacts the camping experience, or provide more descriptive reasons why the location is 'amazing' beyond just the view. This would help move your response from a basic coverage of the points to a more fully developed and engaging letter.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Although,' 'Moreover,' and 'Anyways' to connect your thoughts. However, the transition between the first and second paragraphs is slightly abrupt. Additionally, some sentences are a bit disjointed, such as 'As that is a wonderful activity which is really relaxing,' which is a sentence fragment. To reach a higher band, ensure that your sentences are complete and that you use a wider variety of linking words to create a smoother flow between your paragraphs and individual ideas.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You use a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly, such as 'amazing experience' and 'out of the world.' However, the vocabulary is somewhat repetitive and basic. There are also minor collocation issues, such as 'I'd suggest you to there,' which should be 'I'd suggest you go there.' To improve, try to incorporate more precise adjectives and idiomatic expressions suitable for an informal letter. Expanding your range of descriptive language will help you achieve a higher score in this criterion.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors. For instance, 'As that is a wonderful activity which is really relaxing' is a fragment, and 'I'd suggest you to there' is grammatically incorrect. There are also minor punctuation and phrasing issues, such as the missing comma after 'Anyways.' To improve, focus on ensuring that every sentence has a clear subject and verb, and pay closer attention to verb patterns and prepositions. Reducing these frequent minor errors will significantly improve your score.
