Student answer (Band 8.0)

Dear Himanshu,

I hope you are doing well. I heard that you are planning to go camping this summer. I think you will really enjoy it because Banff is a great location for camping, where you can go hiking during the day. I know you enjoy trekking and having bonfires at night while watching the sky near the lake.

However, you may find mosquitoes during the night, so don’t forget to take some mosquito repellent with you. Also, check the weather forecast before going camping because sometimes heavy rain and storms can occur at night during the summer.

Moreover, once you come back, I would like to go to Whistler with you. It is located close to Vancouver, where we can enjoy the mesmerizing views of the mountains and the sparkling town from different viewpoints. At night, we can have a bonfire and prepare our own food.

Please let me know if you need any assistance or any other advice.

Regards,

Kiran

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt effectively. You explained why your friend would enjoy camping, provided relevant disadvantages (mosquitoes and weather), and clearly stated your interest in joining them for a trip to Whistler. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, and the ideas are well-developed and relevant to the task. The response is coherent and maintains a friendly, personal tone throughout, which is essential for this type of task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The letter is logically organized with clear paragraphing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which makes the information easy to follow. You have used cohesive devices such as 'However', 'Also', and 'Moreover' to link your ideas effectively. The progression of ideas is smooth, moving from the benefits of camping to the potential drawbacks, and finally to your own travel plans. The use of referencing is clear, and the overall structure is appropriate for a semi-formal or informal letter.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.5

You have used a good range of vocabulary appropriate for the context, such as 'mesmerizing views', 'sparkling town', and 'mosquito repellent'. The word choice is generally precise and natural. While the vocabulary is sufficient and fits the task well, incorporating a few more sophisticated collocations or idiomatic expressions could elevate the score further. There are no spelling or word-choice errors that impede communication, and the language used is consistently accurate and fits the friendly tone of the letter.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.0

Your grammar is strong, with a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. For example, 'I know you enjoy trekking and having bonfires at night while watching the sky near the lake' is a well-constructed complex sentence. Punctuation is used correctly, and there are very few, if any, grammatical errors. The control over verb tenses is consistent, and the sentence variety keeps the writing engaging. The response demonstrates a high level of accuracy, with only minor slips, if any, which is characteristic of a high band score.
