Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Ana,

I hope you're doing well. I'm writing this letter in response to your letter where you were asking about my advice on camping holidays this summer vacation. I'd like to suggest you a place situated in the North India which can be a perfect spot for camping that is Chandratal.

I'm sure you will like these summer vacations because Chandratal is situated near mountains and lakes and I know once you've told me how much you're fond of hilly areas. Moreover, it is a place where you can easily spot stars with your telescope.

There could be number of disadvantages you can face while traveling to this place. The first and foremost disadvantage is that you can easily lose the track while returning as this place is situated near the mountains and there is the internet unavailability near hilly region. To overcome this you can carry a paper map or get help from a tour guide.

It's been ages since we've gone to a trip together, so I was planning to join you along on the camping as I'm also aware of this place. Moreover, it would become easier to spend time if you've a partner. I'd hope you'd consider my suggestion.

Yours faithfully

Nino

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt effectively. You explained why your friend would enjoy camping, identified potential disadvantages like getting lost and lack of internet, and clearly stated your desire to join the trip. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend. To reach a higher band, ensure that your ideas are slightly more developed; for instance, when mentioning the disadvantages, you could elaborate on how the lack of internet specifically impacts safety or navigation, rather than just suggesting a solution. Overall, the response is well-focused and meets the requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with clear paragraphing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your ideas easily. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Moreover' and 'The first and foremost disadvantage' to link your thoughts. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical. To improve, try to vary your linking words and ensure that the flow between sentences is more natural. For example, the transition between the introduction and the first body paragraph could be smoother. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task, using words like 'situated', 'unavailability', and 'telescope' correctly. There are some minor issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'lose the track' (should be 'lose track of the path') and 'gone to a trip' (should be 'gone on a trip'). While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the response from reaching a higher band. To improve, focus on learning common collocations and idiomatic expressions suitable for informal correspondence to make your writing sound more natural and precise.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is good. However, there are several grammatical errors throughout the text, such as 'I'd like to suggest you a place' (should be 'suggest a place to you'), 'there could be number of' (should be 'a number of'), and 'if you've a partner' (should be 'if you have a partner'). While these errors are noticeable, they do not prevent the reader from understanding your message. To improve, pay closer attention to article usage and verb patterns. Increasing the frequency of error-free complex sentences will help you achieve a higher score.
